McNeil Informatics Local Correspondence Date: To: From: Subject: September 7, 2004 Chuck Williams, Instructor Daniel Tran, Techwriting Student Advise for Denise McNeil Regarding Discrimination -- McNeil Informatics The purpose of this memo is to explain my opinions concerning Denise McNeil’s recent decisions on naming head officials for McNeil Informatics. The officials will then meet with the Crescent Petroleum owners, of whom are Saudi Arabian men. Summary I did not agree on your identity change and hesitation to elect Mark Feldman as the lead engineer for the company. I believe that you and Mark are the best the company has for the positions, and both of you should represent McNeil Informatics. I think we should discuss this when the time and opportunity arises. Discussion McNeil Informatics comprises of a higher percentage of women with a small overall number. The upper echelons of jobs in McNeil Informatics are held by females. Mark Feldman has clearly shown a higher level of competence in his field, it is clear he should be elected to represent. Although masking your identity is convenient, it is not the appropriate method to rectify this situation. Mark Feldman’s ethnic background should not be a problem if he does his job well enough to earn respect from the owners of Crescent Petroleum (CP). At this state, I think it would be best to go with what we have. Any concealment of identification may result in repercussions that may endanger the company greater. Also, if Mark is to be replaced by someone else, the work may or may not be up to standard by the CP. We cannot risk doing this, as I firmly believe the negatives outweigh the positives with your decision. Advocacy Please contact me as soon as possible. I would like to talk to you about your declaration on the matter. I think we should include Mark Feldman and several of our female employees in our discussion. Give me a call at (x5555) or email me at sparta@temple.edu and we’ll talk then.
