The Peer Partner Program Overview The Peer Partner program is a metacognitive, motivational, self-help program designed for students who are having difficulty in an academic area. It is more than tutoring; it emphasizes the tools and discipline needed to be successful. The program is designed so that once strategies are learned in one subject area, they may be used in other areas (both academic and non-academic) after the student has left the program. Each program, or “game,” lasts one quarter, and contracts can be renewed. How the Program Works: The Peer Team is made up of both a “player” and a “coach.” They agree to work together in the form of a peer contract. There are three participants in each contract: 1. Sponsor: This is the teacher or other school official who will be holding weekly meetings with the players and coaches. 2. Coach: This is the student who is selected to work with a player. The student must be doing well in the subject area, be well organized, and be able to communicate well with others. 3. Player: This student is selected to the team to improve his/her skills in that subject area. Rewards: Beyond the obvious benefit of working closely with other students for a common good, all three participants in this contract reap significant rewards. 1. Sponsor: The teachers are secure in the knowledge that their students are applying their learning in real-world situations. 2. Coach: These students receive extra credit for their efforts, above and beyond the joy of helping others. 3. Player: These students get individual instruction from peers who know what they are going through and have successful strategies to share in that subject area. All coaches and players will be eligible to participate in the Peer Partner Banquet.
