MARY KELLY BURSARY
UCD School of Sociology
The UCD School of Sociology invites applications from suitable candidates for a Mary Kelly Bursary of €2,000.
Dr Mary Kelly was a long-serving member of the UCD School of Sociology who died in 2010. Mary researched and taught
across a range of topics, including sociology of the media and, more recently, environmental sociology, and over the course
of her career, she made an enormous contribution to the School, and to the many students she taught and supervised. This
Fund is an opportunity to celebrate Mary’s memory and her contribution to Sociology, to UCD, and to Irish society generally.
The Mary Kelly Bursaries comprise an award of €2,000 towards university fees to students who have been accepted to one
of the School of Sociology graduate degree programmes (MSocSc or PhD/MLitt). Three Bursaries will be awarded: two for
incoming Masters students (limited to full-time students in one-year 90 credit programmes), and one for an incoming
MLitt/PhD student (limited to full-time students).
THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS APPLY:

Applicants who have applied to and have received a full offer of a place on their chosen programme may submit a
completed bursary application form (provisional and/or conditional offers are not accepted)

The bursaries are only available to students registering full-time (and in the case of Masters students, to those
registering for one-year, 90 credit programmes)

Bursaries will be paid in two tranches - at the beginning of 1st and 2nd semesters

Awards may not be deferred

If the applicant is unable to pursue his/her studies in accordance with the Bursary conditions and in the specified time,
the School reserves the right to reallocate the funds in whole or in part to another appropriate applicant.
APPLICATIONS COMPRISE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
1. The applicant’s academic record to date;
2. A description of the applicant’s research interests (for MSocSc applicants) or thesis (for MLitt/PhD applicants), the
social impact of this research and how it relates to the advancement of the discipline of Sociology (max: 300 words);
3. A personal statement outlining your background and motivation for pursuing a graduate degree in Sociology. (max:
300 words).

GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATION OF APPLICATIONS
Applications will be evaluated by an Assessment Committee appointed by the Head of School, and will normally comprise:
the Head of the School of Sociology, a member of the Graduate Studies Committee, and another member of the School of
Sociology or a cognate School.
Applicants will be evaluated by each of the panel members independently under each of the following criteria: (1) their
academic record; (2) the coherence and social relevance of their research topic; and (3) their personal statement, including
particular achievements, or other relevant factors. The panel will then collectively decide. The panel’s decision is final.
