AF_SCC02_ What's the matter? Teacher’s guide 1. Objectives Introducing students to terms and expressions. Providing the tools for students to feel able to write and speak in English at an intermediate level. Creating potentially real situations in which students need to use English. Generating a proper environment in which students feel comfortable experimenting their relationship with the English language. Building up student self-esteem regarding English. Having a good time while learning. 2. Use of the materials and teacher’s recommendations This material is mostly designed for use in digital form. Every unit has three kinds of activities. It’s important to follow the order or the activities because the complexity increases as the unit ends. There are three kinds of activities: Introduction activities: the student is introduced in the vocabulary Input activities: there are different exercises to practise the vocabulary learned Sum-up activities: there are more difficult exercises where student has to show all that he/she has learnt. It’s also important to start with unit 1 and follow the order of activities. Also the complexity increases. 3. Methodology It’s important to do classes in a computer class. Every student needs a computer. At the same time, it’s important to see the sum-up activities. Some of them don’t need computers. A planning of every unit is provided so the teacher can start the introduction activities together and after the introduction, every student can work alone. When they arrive to the sum-up activities, the teacher can collect the class work or the exercises that they have done. Every unit starts with vocabulary about something about medicine. With the first activity, students watch and listen to vocabulary. With input activities they practise. The teacher can evaluate the memory games, fill the gaps and crosswords activities. Finally, when a student finishes a unit there is always a writing, a listening or a video that they have to do. The teacher has to help them and correct exercises. It’s not necessary to do an exam. AF_SSC02_What's the matter? 1 4. Assessment The teacher has a lot of things to evaluate. Every unit has the input activities (memory games, fill the gaps, crosswords). And there are the sum-up activities that he/she can also evaluate (writing, recording, video…). One way to assess the students is: UNIT 1 Introduction activities 15% Memory 15% Fill the gaps 15% Recording your voice 15% UNIT 2 Match the words 15% Cross words 15% Going to the doctor’s writing 20% UNIT 3 Introduction activities 15% Memory 15% Writing 20% summary 20% UNIT 4 Crossword 15% Vade mecum 15% Script 20% Video 30% Final mark: 15% (introduction activities +memory+ fill the gaps + match the words + cross words / 8) + 20 % (writings + summary + script/3) + 15% (recording voice + vade mecum / 2) + 20% script + 30% video AF_SSC02_What's the matter? 2 5. Other considerations All the introductory and input activities are individual. But the sum-up activities are in group. If you don’t have a computer class, you can do the introductory activity together with the teacher’s computer and a projector. If you don’t have computers when you are doing the input activities, you can only print the crosswords, the fill the gaps or the matching exercises the words. The memory games are not possible to do without computers. Finally, if you don’t have computers when you are doing the sum-up activities, don’t worry, you can project the activity and students do it (watching a video, writing, listening…).
