Biology 1010 (ePortfolio) genetics poster response
In biology we had to get into groups of two and make a poster on a genetic disorder. My
partner and I got Von Hipple Lindau Syndrome as our disorder. I learned a variety of
things about this disorder, including that it is recessive. This means that you get it by
inheriting it from your parents. I also learned that if you have this disease you develop
tumors throughout your body that are mostly noncancerous. They can get these tumors
anywhere in their bodies, from their eyes to their feet. When they get the cancerous blood
cells in their eyes it can cause loss of vision. The chances of getting this disease are 1 in
36000. To sum up the disorder, cells grow and divide uncontrollably to form tumors and
cysts, and 1 in every 10 people with Von Hipple Lindau Syndrome develops sac tumors
in the inner ear and can cause loss of hearing and/or unbalance.
During this class I learned a lot about genetics. First off from the basics, DNA is the
genetic material. The way that this was figured out was by Hershey and Chase, in their
experiment where they found a chemical difference between DNA and protein. I also
learned there was criteria to be a genetic material like; variables to cause species to vary
from one another
, ability to undergo rare changes called mutations which allow
for evolution to happen. I also learned that there are barriers that maintain genetic
differences between species; prezygotic and postzygotic isolating mechanisms. Jean
Baptiste de Lamarck came up with the idea that use and disuse of a structure can bring
out an inherited change. Darwin studied artificial selection, which is when humans
choose the traits that animals and plants will produce. I also learned about recessive
genes, and how they are distributed to the offspring from the parents depending on which
genes the parents give.
