One Post-Doc and one PhD position available at the Rock Deformation Laboratory, Geological Institute, ETH Zurich The two positions are for an experimental study of rock deformation/seismic property up to very large torsion/shear strain on two-phase synthetic aggregates ranging in composition from pure illite to pure quartz at increasing temperature until melting under controlled water pressure conditions. Measuring seismic properties will serve to monitor the anisotropy build up during deformation and to correlate strain with anisotropy. This information will provide new constraints on the interpretation of seismic signals that detect the natural anisotropy of rocks. We will span a wide metamorphic range, from subdiagenetic to melting conditions, for constant bulk compositions of rocks. One PhD student will conduct the experimental study on the system mica+quartz at variable temperature, strain rates and on closed systems. The post-Doc will conduct experiments on both illite+quartz and mica+quartz, under wet and variable pore pressure in order to approach more geologically relevant conditions. Further information and application can be obtained from our web site http://www.structuralgeology.ethz.ch/ Information about the lab facilities and running projects can be found on the RockDeformationLab page: http://www.rockdeformation.ethz.ch/ Selection of candidates will start immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.
