Project Description
This project will use samples collected during the tri-annual mackerel surveys of 1998 and 2001 to investigate
zooplankton distribution and biodiversity in the Atlantic area. The tri-annual mackerel surveys have an
exceptional coverage of the Atlantic area (> 1200 samples per survey from Portugal to Scotland) but, because
fund limitations, only mackerel eggs and larvae are analysed. We intend to further exploit those samples in order
to extend the information obtained to the zooplankton.

Main Aims
To investigate zooplankton distribution in the Atlantic area.
To investigate zooplankton biodiversity in the Atlantic area.
To understand relations between zooplankton distribution and growth and the main hydrographic
structures.
To investigate the relations between zooplankton distribution and recruitment of fishes of commercial
interest.
Expected Results
Maps of zooplankton distribution per size class to be used as an input in fish larvae transport and
growth models.
Establishment of basic biodiversity catalogues for the different areas.
Comparison of zooplankton growth rates between different areas of the Atlantic façade.
