Procedure:
Show student the clip from the following site:

1. Student will identify the possible problem.
2. Introduce scenario to students by handing out situation sheet with argumentation outline.
3. Have students generate their own questions by asking what is the problem in this
scenario?
4. Once students have generated their own questions they will use the outline to write their
claim about their question and share each with the class before moving forward (it is
important that students have a chance to change their claim during this discussion)
5. After students form questions, show them the bio of Godzilla and the resume for each of
the heroes.
6. Students will use the bios and hero resumes as evidence and then use explain their
reasoning by connecting evidence to their claim.
7. Select a few students to share and critic questions and claims.
8. After give student a chance to edit their initial claims and then have them write their
final scientific explanation that solves their problem using claim, evidence, and reasoning
( should be in paragraph form)
Closure: Pose the following questions and proceed in an open class discussion
1. What would life be like for the people of the island without Godzilla?
2. What would life be like for Godzilla if the people were not there?
3. Can you offer an alternative solution to the situation that is facing the island other than
bringing in superheroes?
Assessment: (10 minutes) the students will write a summary based on the hero they choose
to deal with the towns issue (can be the one they initially chose or a different hero) that are to
include the claim, evidence, reasoning and rebuttal.

For centuries the people of Lagos Island and Godzilla have never been able to live in harmony
and nobody has figured out a solution yet, the residents who see Godzilla as a problem have
posted a job opening to hire the right hero to help them reach a solution. Using scientific
explanations examine the facts to create a flyer in support of your hero and write a final
argument to the people of Lagos about who they should choose to help them.

Godzilla’s Bio
Godzilla started out as a Godzillasaur, on the island of Lagos in the pacific. During World War
II, the island was used as a battleground. Godzilla wiped out the soldiers, but he was also shot,
and left to die. But the when the first atomic bomb was tested on nearby Bikini island, it mutated
the dinosaur into Godzilla.

Personal info: Master Chief is the main character of Halo comic series by Marvel Comics.
Master Chief is a genetically augmented super soldier for the USNC and is one of the few
survivors of the SPARTAN II project. He is one of the greatest if not the greatest soldier in
UNSC history.

Abilities: Super sayian transformation (for improved power), energy blast, solar flares, super
human strength, superhuman speed, master of martial arts and fighting, and can use instant
teleportation.
Personal info: An uncultured, simple-minded guy who loves getting stronger and being
challenged above all else, but will always use his power to protect his home and loved ones.

Abilities: Super cuteness (allows her to be loved by all), ability to talk, ability to win people’s
hearts, can bake and cook anything.
Personal info: Hello Kitty is a very energetic juvenile female; she “loves to play outdoors, in the
park or forest. But you can also find her happily practicing on the piano or baking a cake, too.”

Abilities: Enormously strong strength, body is superhumanly durable and nearly impervious to
force, pain, and disease, her skin can withstand extremes of temperature, as well as tremendous
stresses and impacts without puncture wounds or lacerations, remains highly intelligent when she
changes.
Personal info: As the cousin of Bruce Banner, Jen Walters received her abilities when she had a
transfusion of blood from her gamma-powered cousin. She usually has the ability to change into
her She-Hulk form on demand, and usually retains her intellect after the change as well

Abilities: Genius level intellect, indomitable will (unstoppable determination), intimidation,
interrogation, peak human conditioning, and human acrobat. (No super powers)
Personal info: A man dressed like a bat that fights against evil and strikes terror into the hearts
of criminals everywhere. In his secret identity he is Bruce Wayne, billionaire industrialist and
notorious playboy. Although he has no superhuman powers, he is one of the world's smartest
men and greatest fighters. His physical prowess and technical ingenuity make him an incredibly
dangerous opponent.
