Subject: Interactive Whiteboard Options
What I want…..:




Whiteboard connects directly to computer VGA and USB wirelessly
Emits bright image of computer screen in normal classroom lighting conditions.
Touch sensitive controls on screen allow full control of computer (as per mouse or touchpad)
Background software allows
 - overwriting of computer screen with freehand annotations,
 - capture of all or part of screen
 - capture of screen sequence with accompanying audio as a movie file
 - handwriting recognition and conversion in real time while writing on board
 - overlay of images (e.g. graph paper) as templates to write on
 - variety of “reveal” methods for highlighting content
What is available:
 Touch sensitive plasma screens which do most of above but are ridiculously expensive; easy to
damage, comparatively small
 Touch sensitive whiteboards (e.g. Webster see below) that do most of the above but don’t emit
light. They suffer from high comparative cost, and still need a projector (preferably both projector
and whiteboard are fixed because calibration between them is crucial).
The offer automatic position calibration and maximum ease of use at a high price.
 Whiteboards with movement detection system built in do most of above but are expensive cf.
clip on whiteboard position detection systems and have other disadvantages re. portability and
replacement of integrated whiteboard if damaged.
 Whiteboard movement detection systems (e.g. Mimio and eBeam see below) do most of above at
much lower cost than the touch sensitive screens. They connect by cable or wireless to the
computer and software achieves most of the above functions listed. As they are positioned on the
board their movement detection is not obscured even if thre projector light is blocked by the user (cf
to some detection systems coming on the market that have the detector positioned with the
projector).
Of these options, we have chosen to buy, mimio and eBeam to compare their quality (esp. the
software) under operational conditions. Results toi date are very impressive for both. Need a few
months to decide which of the two might get the next multiple order !
Depending on budget, I may also buy a large webster to see if the ease of use is worth the price.
Strongly recommend that:
1. Fix the projector and the screen OR expect to maintain onsite AV personnel to repeatedly setup
and troubleshoot as needed
2. Provide a trolley/ table for the controlling notebook (or a dedicated computer ) which has all
cables (AV, audio and USB) ready for staff plug in. Setting up is THE major disincentive to
use.
3. Leave a portable CD player or speaker set permanently on the table trolley, as many staff need
to multimedia.

Webster TS600 Conference PC Whiteboard
The Webster TS is a 3’x4’ landscape format PC Whiteboard in the
Webster Professional Series. The Webster Professional Series is the
premiere line of whiteboard products from PolyVision Corporation
and includes all of the capabilities found in the standard line of Business Series whiteboards. In addition
Professional Series whiteboards have some advanced features including LED indicators, touchscreen
projection support, forms and overlays, and multiple board tiling.
The Webster connects to a PC through a standard serial communications port and records everything
written on it. From there the information can be filed, printed, e-mailed, faxed, or shared in real-time
