The Freud Museum London
Acting Director
Temporary appointment, 12 months
Salary: £32,000 (negotiable), full or part time (negotiable)
The Freud Museum London is looking for an Acting Director for a one year appointment
while the present Director is living in the US. The Acting Director will be responsible for
the day to day management of this specialist small museum as well as leading the next
stage of the Museum’s redevelopment.
The house in Hampstead where Sigmund Freud spent the last year of his life, and
where his daughter Anna lived and worked, has been open to the public since 1986.
Besides containing Sigmund Freud’s study, library, archives and collection of
antiquities, the Museum runs a lively public programme of events, exhibitions and
conferences exploring the intellectual legacy of both Sigmund and Anna Freud. This
year the Museum carried out redevelopment of its displays and interpretation,
refurbished the shop and created new events and exhibition space. Visitor numbers
have risen consistently in the last few years, and the Museum attracts an international
audience and reputation.
The Acting Director should be an energetic leader, with a track record in management,
shaping public programming, interpersonal skills, and planning, as well as an interest in
Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis. The postholder will have experience of running a
small museum, museum department, or arts organization. Experience of HLF
applications would be an advantage. The post holder will be enthusiastic about
continuing to broaden the Museum’s appeal, and promoting the role of psychoanalysis
in contemporary society.
The post will be for a year in the first instance, with the possibility of an extension. The
post is advertised as fulltime, but with the potential for flexibility. The current Director will
be working on the Museum’s behalf in the US, and will be available for support and
advice. Pay in the region of £32,000pa, to be negotiated. Successful applicant to start
as soon as possible.
