PRESS RELEASE
The Freud Museum London features in a new BBC4 series about three
small museums made by award winning director Richard Macer. The wry
and affectionate look behind the scenes at the Freud Museum will be
screened on Thursday 20 May at 9pm.
The Freud Museum London in Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead, was the home of Sigmund
Freud and his family when they fled from Nazi rule in Austria in 1938. It remained the family
home until Anna Freud, another pioneering figure in the development of psychoanalysis, died in
1982, when at her wish it became a Museum. The centrepiece of the Museum is Sigmund
Freud’s study, with his famous couch and collection of antiquities, preserved as they were in his
lifetime.
Over the last year, the Museum has seen a sharp rise in visitor numbers, by running a varied and
unusual programme of exhibitions, talks, conferences and events. These include two successful
singles nights featured in the BBC documentary.
This summer’s art exhibitions include sculptures in the garden from Jane McAdam Freud, a
replacement carpet for the iconic couch made by Mexican artist Santiago Borja, and portraits of
psychiatrists and their patients from Wellcome funded artist Gemma Anderson. Also showing is
an exhibition about Sigmund Freud’s last year in England, including personal objects such as his
overcoat, walking boots, medical material, and original letters.
In July the Museum is running a major conference Psychoanalysis, Money and the Economy,
where speakers will include Vince Cable, Susie Orbach, Oliver James and Gillian Tett.
The Museum is also trying to raise funds to preserve the house, to expand its library and research
opportunities, and make extensive improvements to access, interpretation and visitor services.
