MFL, 1985, via JMD:
In 1985 Mark did research on this house for
the owner, Mary Ann Rzpeski. I have copies
of his report. The ownership of this house is
as follows (Plan 49N6, Plots 166 and 209):
4 May 1880: Rosina M. Stadleman, widow of
John to Edith R. Darrach, wife of William
1 July 1886: Edith R. Darrach to Annie
Flavell, wife of Thomas
Thomas
Flavell was the owner, along with his brother
George J., of a hosiery mill on Church Lane
(old address no. 29). George lived at old no.
121 (probably now 124) W. Penn St.
According to Thomas' granddaughter who was
still alive in 1985 and whom Mark spoke with,
"5340 Greene St. was the old Stadleman
house, remodeled and added to by Thomas
Flavell -- front living room, dinning room and
stairwell -- fire destroyed the north wall of the
house and Thomas Flavell painted entire
house."
Per JMD: Germantown Guide, 10
September 1887: "STRIKING
IMPROVEMENTS”: “Not far from the
above, on Greene street, below Coulter,
next the substantial mansion of
Councilman Gates, the former Stadleman
dwelling has undergone a charming
change within the past month or two. It
is now owned by Mr. Flavel,
manufacturer, and when finished will be
on the gems of that fashionable
neighborhood. George W. Baxter did the
work for Mr. Church, and Joseph L.
Carpenter is doing the latter."

“The earliest commercial section of Town was
south of Peak Creek along Valley and
Commerce Streets. In 1884, however, the
Pulaski Land & Improvement Company built
the stone embankment channeling Peak Creek
through the Town, allowing what was
marshland North of the railroad tracks to be
filled with molten furnace slag from local
industries and developed. In that same year,
the Norfolk & Western Railway built Maple
Shade Inn with a design similar to the current
Hotel Roanoke. During its heyday the Inn

stopped to enjoy the fine summer climate and

1882, Roanoke was a little town named Big
Lick when enterprising railroad magnate
Frederick J. Kimball chose it as the site of a
railroad juncture and a major city. After
Kimball combined two of his railroads into
the Norfolk and Western Railroad, he built his
vision of a comprehensive community with
the Hotel Roanoke as its grand centerpiece.

Prior to this they lived in some nice Queen

family member who was living in the family's
old summer home in the Poconos. It may
have also been done by Pearson since it was

‘129 Carpenter Lane aka "Stone Gables," was
designed for Sidney Longstreth Wright by C.
Wharton Churchman and E.J. Holmes and
built in 1915.
‘Until 1912, when his first wife died, Wright
lived in "Cliff Lawn" on Carpenter Lane, just
above the Carpenter Station. King's
Philadelphia and Notable Philadelphians
includes a photo of that house. King describes
it as follows:
"On one of the choicest elevations in Pelham,
formerly part of the well-known Carpenter
estate, amid several acres of lovely lawn and
hardwood shade trees, stands the substantial
and beautiful Colonial stone residence of
Sydney L. Wright, the banker and broker, and
director of various corporations." "Stone
Gables" was built for Wright and his new
wife, Kate Lewis (m. 1915).
‘It's possible, indeed likely, that "Cliff Lawn"
was a Pearson house or that it was modified
by Pearson. One other possible lead: S.L.
Wright had the house next door to us (a fine
colonial revival at 117 Carpenter Lane) built
circa 1905-06 for his daughter Henrietta and
her husband Robert Lea. It's possible that this
was Pearson's handiwork.
