Post:
Costumed Interpreter – Housekeeper (A number of
part-time positions available on a casual contract basis)
Reporting to:
No. 1 Royal Crescent Administrator
Purpose of role:
To provide a welcome to visitors to No. 1 Royal Crescent,
check tickets and guide people to the ticket entrance to the
museum. To assist with special guided tours and events as
required.
No. 1 Royal Crescent is currently undergoing a major restoration project to reunite the
house with its original servants’ wing. The new museum will have a total of 10 dressed
rooms and spaces, double the amount in its previous incarnation. In previous years, No. 1
Royal Crescent received on average 50,000 visitors per year and we are expecting this to
increase to at least 60,000 per year following re-opening in June 2013. The museum is open
to the public seven days per week, closed Monday mornings.
The purpose of this role will be to welcome visitors through the main entrance to No. 1
Royal Crescent, setting the scene for their experience through the museum. This role will
also create a visible ‘Georgian’ presence on the Royal Crescent and as such fulfils an
important marketing function for the museum. A key part of the role will be to direct
potential visitors to the ticketing entrance to the museum as they will need to buy a ticket
before entering the house through the front door.
Key responsibilities
Welcome and inform visitors
 Dressed as an eighteenth-century Housekeeper, to be the first point of contact for
visitors about to enter the historic house. A suitable costume will be provided.
 To work with the Ticket Office and Front of House team to welcome all visitors.
 Hold and develop excellent knowledge of the history of No. 1 Royal Crescent and
Georgian Bath
 Check tickets
 Direct people to the ticket entrance as required
Develop interpretive skills
 After training and research, to be able to give presentations to groups of visitors in
the front hall
 After training and research, to be able to give guided tours of the house to groups of
visitors.
 To be able to demonstrate aspects of Georgian life to visitors
 To answer questions from the public in an informed and accessible way.
 To assist the Education Officer with providing specific educational activities for
pupils of all ages
In addition, the postholder may be required to undertake other duties and responsibilities
compatible with the overall scope of the post.
Person Specification
Knowledge:
Interest and passion for history, in particular Georgian Bath
Customer care training and/or experience
Skills:
Good Communicator
Effective team member
Self-motivated
Common sense approach
Good people skills and a tactful, professional approach
Literate
Experience:
Relevant previous experience is desirable but not essential as full training will be given
Working hours:
A number of part time seasonal positions are available on a casual contract basis,
responding to the visitor flows across the year and averaging 15 hours per week during high
season. Shifts will be available to cover the following opening hours:
Monday – 12pm-5pm
Tuesday – Sunday - 10.30am -5pm
Basic pay – £6.19 / hour + holiday allowance
