Ward 29 is part of Ninewells Children’s Hospital which also includes a High Dependency Unit, Short Stay Assessment unit, Ward 30 /Children’s Theatre, Ward 10 at Perth Royal Infirmary and the Paediatric Outpatients Clinics. Ms Jeanette Fitzgerald Ms Pauline Mc Eachan 01382633829 Mr Kevin Mc Farlane Ward 29 is a 35 bedded unit and cares for patients aged 0-14 years with both medical and surgical conditions. Children are admitted to the ward (1) directly from the short stay G P assessment unit (2) from the accident and emergency department (3) Out patient clinics (4) Transferred from high dependency unit or other paediatric wards, waiting list admissions. Some long term patients also have direct access to the ward for emergency assessment / treatment. In our ward staff work in teams. For your first placement you will be allocated a Mentor and Associate Mentor from one of the 4 teams, on return placements you will be allocated to a different team to facilitate gaining maximum experience. Ward Teams Green Team. The green team cares for children with oncology and haematology disorders. Our unit is a “shared care unit” for oncology disorders i.e. care and treatment is shared between here and Edinburgh Sick Children’s Hospital which is our nearest UKCCSG centre (United Kingdom cancer care study group centre) Ward charge nurse for green team ……..Catherine Borland. Paediatric oncology specialist nurses ….Gaye Steele/ Karen McIntyre. Dr Wilkie is Lead Paediatric consultant for green team and Dr Peebles is associate specialist Paediatrician. Blue Team The blue team cares for children with a wide range of acute and genetic neurological disorders. Ward charge nurse for blue team………..Elaine Jackson. Paediatric neurology nurse specialist…… Karen Lawrence. Dr Kirkpatrick and Dr Jollands are the lead consultants for the blue team. Red Team The red team specialises in the care of children with cystic fibrosis and all other respiratory disorders. Ward charge nurse for red team…………Mary Malone Paediatric cystic fibrosis nurse specialist ..Gail Milne Dr Mukhopadhyay is lead consultant for cystic fibrosis patients. Yellow Team The yellow team specialises in the care of emergency surgical / orthopaedic and trauma conditions. Ward charge nurse for yellow team………Kathleen Hansen Consultant on call for speciality will share care with paediatrician on call for all emergency surgical cases. All teams also care for acute and arranged general admissions and daycase patients. Your Placement. Students Off Duty Students off duty is allocated on a monthly basis, students are expected to work the same shift pattern as their mentor or associate mentor where possible, if you experience problems with off duty or any other aspect of your placement and your mentor is not available please see charge nurse for your allocated team or any member of the school of nursing liaison group ( list in students off – duty folder) who will be happy to help.
