Intramural sports is a solution that is tried and true. Meeting students from across the campus while accumulating "Points" for your unit and having fun doing it is what intramurals is all about. A little exercise and excitement cannot hurt anyone. Over 50 percent of students, from both on and off-campus, enjoyed particiapating in last year's up and growing intramural program at WSC. If you have not done it, give it a try and find out what thousands of students already have; that Intramural activities at WSC can provide fantastic opportunities and experiences.--- I think you'll feel it is worthwhile! OBJECTIVES The aim of the Intramural Department and Intramural program is to provide men and women at Wayne State to participate in his/her favorite type of competitive sports. Such a competitive program should provide: (1) An opportunity to maintain better health through exercise. With the pressure of world problems and modern living requirements, it is important that the individual take time out periodically for recreational pursuits in order to help maintain a healthful mental equilibrium. (2) An opportunity to make social contacts and friendships which could not readily be developed in the classroom. (3) An opportunity to learn the important values developed through team spirit, cooperation, and experience; the satisfaction of belonging to a group. (4) An opportunity for relaxation from strenuous school work and the rapid pace of modern living. (5) An opportunity to develop sportsmanship of the highest order. Everything that sportsmanship implies should be developed on the playing fields of Wayne State. (6) The opportunity for every individual, regardless of his ability, to realize the joy and fun of participation in his favorite sport against good competition. (7) An opportunity for each individual to develop sport skills usable in later life. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EXAMINATIONS THE INTRAMURAL DEPARTMENT CANNOT ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR INJURY INCURRED DURING PARTICIPATION IN ANY OF THE SCHEDULED ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS *** CONDITION IS A MATTER OF INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY *** Injuries should be taken to Providence Medical Center, 1200 Providence Road, where X-rays and other proper facilities are provided. THE DEPARTMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR BILLS INCURRED FROM INTRAMURAL ATHLETIC INJURIES. All injuries should be reported to the individual in charge. This person will make a written report to the Intramural Director concerning the cause, nature of, and treatment of the injury in question. GENERAL RULES 1. All participants must be employees of the college or college students or spouses, currently employed or enrolled. 2. A player may play only on one team in each sport. A player will be considered a member of that team if he enters an officially scheduled intramural league contest or places his name on the official roster. 3. An intramural unit refers to a residence hall, a fraternity or sorority, an recognized campus organization, or off campus. There will be competition among dormitories, fraternities, sororities, and campus organizations determine an overall champion at the end of the school year. 4. Each intramural unit may enter any number of teams in intramural competition, in any given activity, but only the top three will count for league and place points. 5. Any student may participate in all scheduled events with a recognized campus organization as long as he/she is an official member of that organization. 6. A player may participate in intramurals for a fraternity or sorority as long as he/she is an "active" member of the organization or has paid their pledge fee. 7. Teams and team members names should be entered on official intramural entry forms prior to the entry deadline. Each team must have enough eligible team members listed on their entry to provide sufficient players for the sport in question by the entry deadline. 8. The person listed as captain of any team on an intramural team entry form shall assign any overall championship points earned by the team to the unit of his/her choice. 9. New players may be added at any time, provided they are eligible under intramural rules. EXCEPTION: No new players may be added for playoff games or post-season games. Players must play at least two regularly scheduled games or matches, prior to any tournaments or post-season games. 10. All professional athletes are ineligible in the intramural sports of their specialty. Any collegiate lettermen at WSC, or winners of comparable awards may participate in the intramural sport of their specialty one year after having lettered in that sport. These rules apply to both men's and women's sports. 11. Junior college lettermen will be eligible to compete in intramurals. 12. Candidates for varsity and freshmen inter-collegiate squads are not eligible for intramural participation in sports for which they are practicing if the intramural season for that sport has started. Fall baseball candidates are ineligible to compete in intramural softball. This includes both men's and women's sports. 13. Any freshmen or varsity squad members who drops from the squad after the intramural season in the same sport has started, will not be eligible to participate in the sport involved for the current year. 14. Track varsity or freshmen candidates are ineligible for intramural competition if they have participated in any freshmen or varsity matches or meets, exhibition or otherwise, during the current school year. 15. No player may play under an assumed name. 16. Each player is responsible for his own eligibility, and should be familiar with intramural rules. 17. Special or unusual cases involving eligibility, will be decided by the Intramural Council and/or the Intramural Director. EXAMPLE: A person wants to play in a particular sport but there is no team for the unit they should play for. 18. All protests, except eligibility protests, must be made in writing and presented to the Intramural Office within twenty-four hours after the contest in question. Eligibility protests should be called to the attention of the Intramural Office before the team competes in another contest. 19. Protests based solely on a decision which involves accuracy of judgment on the part of the official shall not be considered. 20. Two successive forfeits by an intramural team means automatic forfeiture of the remaining games and a revision of the schedule if necessary to compensate for the loss of a team or teams. INTRAMURAL PARTICIPANT CONDUCT Any participant incurring three unsportsmanlike or technical fouls or game misconduct reprimands during a sport season will be dropped from the league in the sport in which they are participating in. Participants are informed that whenever they are removed from a contest by an official or supervisor, they are immediately ineligible to participate in any further competition until they have met with the Director of Intramural Sports. Following that meeting, they will be suspended from play in one or two contests or, if the incident is severe, for the remainder of the season, one semester, two semesters, one year, or permanently. Anyone who physically abuses an opponent, spectator, or teammate is suspended from the remainder of the semester, or the season, whichever is longest. Physically abusing an official or supervisor results in the individual receiving a minimum penalty of suspension from the remainder of the season. Also, when the incident involves physical abuse, the individuals are put on permanent probation. Should the participant be involved in such an incident in the future, he would be permanently suspended from all intramural sports activities while he is attending Wayne State College. Further, in any case involving student discipline, a disciplinary report is completed and placed on file at the Dean of Students Office. INTRAMURAL COUNCIL The Intramural Council membership represents the various "units" on the Wayne State campus. The Council members play a very important part in the operation of the Intramural program. Intramural Council representation should be selected because of their stated interest in promoting the Intramural program on campus. They should be capable organizers and able to spend time assisting the various managers of the "unit" teams. Criticism and suggestions should be made to members of the Intramural Council. The Intramural Council meets on the last Tuesday of each month. TEAM MANAGERS Each team should appoint or elect a team manager who will be responsible for all matters concerning his/her team during the season. The name, address, and/or room number should be on the official team entry sheet. This person should possess leadership qualities and have a keen interest in sports. A SUCCESSFUL INTRAMURAL SEASON IS USUALLY DEPENDENT UPON AN INTERESTED AND CAPABLE MANAGER. OFFICIALS Officials are a very important part of the Intramural Program. Your cooperation is needed to encourage the officials aiding the Intramural program to continue their fine work. Officials will make mistakes similar to the mistakes we would all make in the same situations, but remember that in the majority of cases each and every official is trying to do the best job that he can do and would appreciate your support. HOW TO ENTER INTRAMURAL COMPETITION Intramural rosters will be posted on the residence hall floor or be given to the floor R.A. well in advance of the deadline for entries. The intramural representatives will have all additional information concerning the upcoming activities. All you have to do to enter intramural competition is sign up and come when your team is supposed to play. Selected team managers should see the IM representative and secure the additional information. Eligible team members names should be listed carefully and legibly on the official IM entry form by the team manager or IM representative and turned into the IM Office prior to the entry deadline. Some IM activities require no advanced entry and notification of this fact will be made prior to the event in question. - Off campus teams and organization teams should pick up entry forms from the Intramural Office. - Individual team members may be added to the official team list any time during the season, except as stated in the general intramural rules. - Shortly following the entry deadline, the schedule for the sport will be sent out to team managers and IM representatives. - Intramural entry information and forms are always available in the Intramural Office. - Information concerning deadline dates and other important intramural information is posted on the bulletin boards in the lobby of the lower level of the Student Center. AWARD PROGRAM Certificates will be awarded to members of championship teams or individual champions. Game write-ups, box scores, team standings, charts, and other promotional devices are used to publicize the results of the Intramural program. Individual and group satisfaction, perhaps, is much more valuable then trophies and certificates. OVERALL AWARD PROGRAM The primary purpose for establishing an overall scoring system is to encourage increased participation in all intramural activities. A residence hall, fraternity, or sorority earning the most points in it's respective category during the Intramural season is awarded an "Overall Championship Trophy." I. League Sports A. Points 1.
