Minorities in Central Europe: National Identity, Denominations and Politics in Central
and Eastern Europe

The seminar gives and overall picture of ethnic and national minorities of these two regions.
After an introductory theoretical part on interpretations of the very terms and typology of
minorities as such, it looks over the system of international protection of minorities
(conceptions, legislation and tendencies), followed by an analyses of past and recent similar
efforts of Hungarian administrations toward Hungarians living in the neighborous countries
and more detailed reports on these Hungarian communities. In the second part of the semester
it gives a global picture on minority rights and minorities in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech
Republic, Poland, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo and Romania as well as on ethnic
structure and ethnic rights in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The last two topics are Jews and
Gypsies of these regions.
Method of assesment: Practical. Students are to present a paper on a chosen theme at the end
of the semester.
