SUNY Oswego Summer French Language and Civilization Program At the University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, Faculty of Art and Humanities Course Syllabus Three classes are offered: French for beginner, Intermediate French, and Advanced French. Students will take a placement exam to determine proper level. Special courses and internship are offered for students wishing to become teachers of French language. Classes are small groups of 15 students in each classroom. Title: FRENCH FOR BEGINNERS (6 credits) Course includes in-class teaching plus laboratories. I- Aims: To develop the student's knowledge of written and spoken French through progressive development of listening, writing, speaking and reading skills To understand spoken French at an elementary or post elementary level To enable the student to use situational French in everyday situations Il - Indicative Content Listening for gist Listening for specific vocabulary Drills on grammatical structures Structural exercises on pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, adjectives, adverbs and common verbs in the present, past, future and conditional tenses, modals Reading from documents devised for elementary and post elementary students pertaining to French environment and daily social life. Laboratory drills Title : INTERMEDIATE FRENCH (6 credits) Prerequisite : Basic knowledge of French Course includes in-class teaching plus special classes with emphasis on writing, speaking, Civilization, Literature and preparation for a higher level of education in French. I - Aims: To develop the student's knowledge of written and spoken French To understand and respond to spoken French in everyday situations Broaden students' knowledge of everyday life in France To acquire new vocabulary and develop new grammatical structure. Il-Indicative Content Laboratory exercises in: Listening for specific vocabulary; Listening for gist Drills on grammatical structures Development of discourse functions such as description, instruction, narration and explanation Reading from documents related to French environment and daily social life. Short presentations on local environment Title : ADVANCED FRENCH (6 credits) I - Aims: To revise and practice student's knowledge of written and spoken French at an advanced level To give the student opportunity to give presentations on technical subjects Broaden the student's knowledge of French culture Develop and improve, oral, and written skills, the teaching method brings together closely the French language with the French civilization Intermediate and Advanced French: 10 hours of class-room teaching plus 10 hours of special classes with emphasis on writing, speaking, Civilization, Literature and preparation for higher level education.
