One teacher who shied away from the camera and wished to remain anonymous indicated that the problem has been perennial and is completely stressing out the teaching fraternity; she indicated that up to the time no one from the Education Division even consulted them. However,
T.T.U.T.A’s Tobago officer, Ms. Claudette Governor in a telephone conversation noted that this action was committed as a result of non payment of salaries for the month of September. More specifically at the bishops’ high school, Ms. Governor denied the accusation that the teachers had actually walked off noting that they had left to look for their salaries.
Meanwhile, Tobago Channel 5 contacted, Secretary of Education in the
Tobago House of Assembly Mrs. Claudia Groome-Duke, who explained that she was informed that the teachers had a challenge regarding their salaries. Mrs. Claudia Groome-Duke explained that she gave her accounts executive officer the consent to contact the bank to find out when the salaries will be disbursed. The secretary said that she was later notified that First Citizens Bank began paying salaries at 3p.m yesterday
Melamine Recall - Pkg
With the recent death of four babies in China and the illness of over six thousand others, there has been a massive recall of Chinese milk-based products from Asia and Europe. In Trinidad, the products have since been removed from shelves, but in Tobago, there has been no word from the
authorities as to whether any of the products are still being sold. There has been the removal of stocks made in China from the shelves of
Supermarkets across Trinidad. On the banned list include the White Rabbit brand of milk toffee with the edible inner wrapping, milk products including yogurt and infant formula and confectionary, chocolate, biscuits and wafers with milk powder. It was discovered that these products were tainted with the industrial chemical- melamine.
However in Tobago, there has been no word from either the Division of
Health or from the Division of Consumer Affairs on this developing situation in China. Nothing has been said regarding implications for
Tobago and what is being done to ensure that Tobagonians are fully aware of the danger in purchasing these products. Manager of Consumer Affairs
Tobago, Ms. Arlene Job was contacted; she said that employees from her department were visiting supermarkets and stores on the island today to assess the situation. She stated that some of the products might be sold in supermarkets on the island since both islands usually purchase supplies from the same wholesalers.
However County Officer of Health, Dr. Mentor Melville said that the chemical’s threat to Tobago is minimal as the affected products are not usually sold on the island, however he assured that health inspectors have increased their scope to identify products containing the milk-based product leading to its removal.
Melamine is a synthetic chemical used in a variety of industrial applications including the production of resins and foams, cleaning products, fertilizers and pesticides. It is not allowed in food. Health effects from exposure to melamine vary depending on the amount and duration of exposure. Scientific research indicates that effects to the bladder and
kidneys, such as bladder and kidney stones and chronic kidney inflammation, can be seen if exposed to high enough levels of melamine.
And following the dramatic semi final clash, both teams admitted the game was a difficult one, and their preparation for a final spot placement came out well on the field.
