Festival of Lights – VO
VO
Hindu communities across the world will celebrate Divali, the festival of lights today.
The word Divali comes from the Sanskrit word meaning light and row. Traditionally, in
Trinidad and Tobago, devotees take special care in cleaning their homes and
surroundings, wear new clothes, give charity to the poor and at sunset light deyas,
which are made of clay and filled with oil or ghee. It is also traditional that friends and
neighbors are invited to share gifts and a variety of vegetarian food and sweets. Several
legends surround the beginnings of Divali, the most popular being the ultimate love
story of Lord Rama and Sita. Regardless of the legend, what is widely accepted is the
reminder of good over evil and light over darkness.
The aim of Divali celebrations is to get man moving on the spiritual path and ultimately
attain illumination by becoming one with God.
