Anderson School District Five
Gifted and Talented Program
In Compliance with SC Regulations, students may qualify automatically for gifted and
talented placement with an extremely high aptitude (IQ score) at the 96th percentile or
higher for their age group. This testing begins for all second graders with the CoGAT each
November. If students do not qualify solely on aptitude, the process below will be used for
screening, and all students’ scores in Dimension B and/or C will continue to be assessed each
year.
Students must meet the criteria in two of the three dimensions below to be eligible to
receive services in the Gifted and Talented Program in Anderson School District Five.
Reasoning Abilities - Students must demonstrate high aptitude (93rd national age
percentile or above) in one or more of these areas: verbal, nonverbal, quantitative
and/or a composite of the three. (Tests Given: CoGAT, OLSAT, Raven, etc.)
Academic Achievement - Students must demonstrate high achievement (94th
national percentile and above or advanced status) in reading and/or math as
measured by a nationally normed or South Carolina statewide assessment
instruments. (Tests Given: ITBS, Stanford, PASS, spring and fall MAP, etc.)
Intellectual/Academic Performance - Students must demonstrate a high degree of
interest in and commitment to academic and/or intellectual pursuits, or demonstrate
intellectual characteristics such as curiosity/inquiry, reflection, persistence/tenacity in
the face of challenge and creative, productive thinking. Rising 3rd, 4th and 5th grade
students may be eligible to take the Performance Task Test (STAR Test) in March if
they have already met the criteria in Dimension A or Dimension B. The STAR Test can
be taken in grades 2 and 4 or 3 and 5. Beginning with grade 7, students must have a
3.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale to meet the criteria in Dimension C. This GPA is calculated
using final grades in ELA, math, science, social studies, and foreign language only.
See the back page for Criteria for Middle School Placement.

Gifted and Talented Program
Students who are already eligible for gifted services or become eligible while in
middle school will automatically be served in gifted and talented science. Rising 6th and 7th
graders must then qualify for gifted and talented math and/or ELA (Reading and Writing)
using the following criteria:
Students must meet the criteria in two of the three listed below to participate in Gifted
and Talented Math and ELA.
Grades - Students must demonstrate high achievement by earning an A average (94)
for the first, second, and third nine weeks in math and/or ELA.
Achievement Test – Students must demonstrate proficiency on the fall and/or spring
MAP by earning a 94th percentile score in reading and/or math.
Criterion Reference Test - Students must demonstrate superior scores on the state’s
PASS Test. Students have to score in the top ten percent in the state in ELA and/or
math. This score exceeds Exemplary, and it changes each year based on the overall
performance of students across the state. For the past few years, this score has
slightly increased, as students in South Carolina are progressing on the state
assessment.
