Open to family physicians, family medicine residents, other primary care physicians, nurses, nurse educators and nurse manager, the teaching day is designed to give those who are key in preventing and treating chronic wounds the tools to properly recognize, diagnose and manage the treatment of patients with chronic wounds. “Chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers are commonly encountered by physicians in both outpatient and inpatient settings,” said Sudhir Vaidya, M.D., teaching day course director and director of sports medicine and pain management at Burke. “Family physicians are keys to prevention, early recognition, treatment and comprehensive management of patients with these wounds.” The full-day course will cover how to accurately diagnose pressure ulcers, leg ulcers and diabetic foot ulcers; apply compression dressings to non-ischemic leg ulcers; and provide leadership for improvement in wound care. Attendees will also learn how to create appropriate management plans for these common wound types. "Chronic wounds represent a significant burden to patients, health care professionals, and the US health care system,” said Marie Spencer, Ph.D., R.N., CRRN, Burke’s chief nursing officer. “To effectively manage wounds, one must understand the normal healing process. Nurses must have an active role in the treatment and prevention of wounds. Those not treated properly can result in life-threatening infections and lead to diminished quality of life and debilitation.” The teaching day starts at 8:30 a.m. on March 3 at the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital’s Rosedale Room in the Billings Building, 785 Mamaroneck Ave., in White Plains. Complementary registration is provided to the first 50 registrants from Burke, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the New York State Academy of Family Physicians, family medicine residents, family medicine interest group students and BWAFP. -MORE785 MAMARONECK AVENUE, WHITE PLAINS, NEW YORK 10605 914-597-2500 WWW.BURKE.ORG THE BURKE REHABILITATION HOSPITAL News Release - News Release - News Release - News Release - News Release To register, send a $30 check written to BWAFP along with your name, address, phone number and email address to Gloria Negron, Secretary-Wound Healing Program, Department of Family and Social Medicine, Montefiori Hospital, 3335 Steuben Avenue, Bronx, NY 10467.
