ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: HOW DOES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AFFECT MODERN INDUSTRIES? Introduction: Computer technology is one of the fastest developed technologies in modern society. Sixty years ago people developed machine language to accompany the first computer invented; now there is new programming technology known as artificial intelligence (AI) and this technology is used in almost all industries widely around the world. Since this report is a guide for those students who just stepped into universities therefore students must know that while AI has helped create lots of achievements, but there also have issues been unfolded that possess a great influence to the modern world. Section1-Defination of AI Artificial intelligence is a technology that can be explained by taking apart two words “Artificial” and “intelligence”. Artificial means something that is not natural but is made by human skills and intelligence means humans inject intelligence into a machine so that it can perform some complex works like humans. [McCarthy 2007] This means intelligence machines are able to make their own decisions according to a particular situation. Furthermore they are endowed with learning ability which allows them to gain experience from its errors and to learn how to solve problems. AI machines also possess perception ability which makes them be able to sense the environment around it and take the decision accordingly. Some machines even can understand nature language and perform its actions accordingly. On aggregate the basic aim for constructing AI machines is to reduce human efforts. Moreover, to develop such machines which could perform human work this is dangerous for human lives.[ Mian,2010] [Berkeley,1997] Page 1 of 4 Stage 2 English as a Second Language student response Ref: A186657(August 2012) © SACE Board of South Australia 2012 Section2-Application of AI 2A-application in modern industries At modern society, AI has been applied into many areas vary from video games that children play every day to the modern aviation technology, AI exists everywhere and creates some great achievements for the society and our lives. One of the common AI products people should be familiarized with is some non-player characters (NPC) in video games. NPCs in modern games are most-likely acting as analog robots which achieved super-intelligence in computers. Several years ago; no video games would have intelligence NPCs to let players to play with, so those games were boring. Nevertheless modern video games with intelligence NPCs are giving player a brand new taste and also make this industry developed rapidly these days.[ Wikipedia 2011]Another great usage of AI is in the aviation area. There is a kind of AI machine called airplane simulator which is normally used to training pilots and test airplanes’ performance. The simulator will process the data taken from simulated flights. It also been used to simulate the situation like flying or aircraft warfare. The computers are able to come up with the best success scenarios in different situations and create strategies based on various elements. As this technology reduces risks of training pilots and executing maneuvers efficiently, therefore the simulators are now been applied in many countries’ aviation departments.[ Applications of artificial intelligence,2011] 2B-Expert system Furthermore the biggest and the most common usage of AI is to implement it into an expert system which is a kind of intelligence system that applies the substantial knowledge of a specialist to solve complex problems with some non-professional staffs in a particular area. In developing such systems, designers usually work with experts to determine the information and decision rules that the experts use when confronted with particular types of problems. There are several advantages of implementing the system, as they could give novices some specialized advices in a particular area. Moreover the knowledge of an expert can be documented without any time limit in expert system so that if the expert dies, there will not have any knowledge lost. The benefit of the system which is out of the ordinary is knowledge of multiple experts can be integrated to make the system's expertise more comprehensive than any individual experts, as a results due to those benefits the system have been used particularly attractive to businesses.[ Larry,1998 Kategori IT,2011] Page 2 of 4 Stage 2 English as a Second Language student response Ref: A186657(August 2012) © SACE Board of South Australia 2012 Section3-Ethical issues of AI Since those AI machines are so powerful, as the result a part of people are worrying about if those machines will take over the world since machines are much cheaper to purchase than employ human to do works, image if robots begin replacing humans in every field, it may lead to unemployment. Those people that lost their job will be no way to live in the world. There will not have any benefits to let robots replace human beings since people need to keep working in order to live on the world. Another supposition is one day if people invent the thinking machines which will actually think by themselves, they may prove to be smarter than human beings and they might enslave people and start ruling the world. Although this is only a supposition but if the intelligence machines are still developed with an ever-acceleration rate, the supposition might be comes true one day.[ Oak,2007] Section4-Futures of AI Nowdays AI has been developed to about as a 3-year-old child, it could see and hear, respond to questions, learn, draw inferences and solve problems. Therefore for the several years after, most programmers and scientists’ believes that they could develop intelligence machines which will be both self-aware and superhuman in their intelligence, and capable of designing better computers and robots faster than humans can today. [Markoff, 2009] Conclusion In conclusion, in the modern society, people cannot live without those intelligence machines which could do hard and dangerous works instead people, they could interact with people to give useful advices without human experts involved in. However if human hinge on those machines excessively, they will ruin humans’ lives even the whole world. Remember a technology could beneficial for humans but it also could be harmful depends on how people use it.
