“The Neurobiology Underlying the
Developmental Risk for the Development of
Anxiety and Depression”
Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation participants should be able to: 1) describe the
boundaries of adaptive and maladaptive anxiety responses; 2) discuss how altered emotion regulation
processes underlie anxiety disorders; 3) explain the neural circuitry associated with emotion regulation and
how altered function in this circuit is related to anxiety and depression; and 4) identify the developmental
risk factors that for the development of anxiety and depression.

Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The

“Low Birth Weight and Depression: A Test of
Competing Hypotheses”
Objectives: At the end of this presentation audience members will be able to: 1) explore two theories
linking perinatal stress with later illness; 2) discuss adolescent depression as an example of perinatal
predictors of later illness, and to compare the strength of the two theories as explanations of the findings;
and 3) identify possible causal mediators.
