Questions 36-39
Five sentences have been removed from the following text. Read the text and on your optic form, mark the
alternative (A-D) which best fits each gap (36-39). The first one has been done for you (0). (4x2=8 marks)
A) Now everybody has the chance to learn and see things that their grandparents could only read about.
B) Anywhere else, you wouldn’t be able to get to work in time at all!
C) It takes hours and makes very little difference to the planet.
D) Can you imagine what our countryside will look like?
E) Now people who call themselves green seem to think that they know better than the rest of us.
GOING ‘GREEN’: IS IT REALLY A GOOD IDEA?
How green are you? Being green used to mean that you were young and inexperienced. 0. __E__ But just how
intelligent are these new Greens? How well do their ideas work in practice?
Take the example of what happened this week to Donna Challice, mother of three children from Exeter. She was
taken to court for not recycling her rubbish. She was charged with putting food in the green recycling bin which is in
fact for cans, paper, plastic, and glass. She faced a fine of up to £1.000 and the court case cost much more than that!
What a waste of the Court’s time and money. The reality is that recycling household rubbish is a waste of all our time.
36. _____ Only 5% of our waste is made up of household rubbish, while a massive 60% agricultural and industrial.
Why don’t the laws do something about that first?
And it isn’t only local governments that really want to be green. We are surrounded by green thinkers. Have those
people who refuse to accept nuclear energy thought about what renewable energy means? They say that 20% of our
energy has to come from renewable resources such as wind and solar power. 37. _____ There will be forests of giant
wind turbines and nothing in the fields except plants to make bio-fuel. It seems that there is no real alternative to using
more nuclear energy, so why don’t we focus on building new safer nuclear plants?
The European Parliament has just agreed to put new taxes on airlines - to stop pollution - and cut the growing
number of cheap flights. Think about what this means. For the first time in history, it isn’t only the rich and wealthy
that can fly to other parts of the world. 38. _____ However, the European Parliament wants to stop all that.
As for the traffic congestion problems, the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, introduced a charge on people who
drive into the city. Since then, every other city in the country has been thinking of doing the same. But London is the
only city in the country that actually has an excellent transport system. 39. _____ The government seems determined
to get us out of our cars. The latest idea is to charge everyone up to £1.34 a mile to drive their own cars. But what are
we supposed to use instead? I would take the train to work if it weren’t always hours late and so crowded that I am
forced to stand all the way. Thank goodness I’ve got a car and the choice is mine!

TEXT II
Questions 40-43
Read the following text and on your optic form, mark the alternative (A, B, C or D) which best completes the
statements or answers the questions. (4x1.5=6 marks)
Carbon dating can be used to estimate the age of any organic natural material; it has been used
successfully in archeology to determine the age of ancient artifacts or fossils as well as in a variety of other
fields. The principle underlying the use of carbon dating is that carbon is a part of all living things on Earth.
Since a radioactive substance such as carbon-14 has a known half-life, the amount of carbon-14 remaining in
an object can be used to date that object.
Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5.570 years, which means that after that number of years, half of the carbon14 atoms have decayed into nitrogen-14. It is the ratio of carbon-14 in that substance that indicates the age of
the substance. If, for example, in a particular sample the amount of carbon-14 is roughly equivalent to the
amount of nitrogen-14, this indicates that roughly half of the carbon-14 has decayed into nitrogen-14, and the
sample is approximately 5.570 years old.
Carbon dating cannot be used effectively in dating objects that are older than 80,000 years. When objects
are that old, much of the carbon-14 has already decayed into nitrogen-14, and the miniscule amount that
is left doesn’t provide a reliable measurement of age. In the case of older objects, other age-dating methods
are available, methods which use radioactive atoms with longer half-lives than carbon has.
40. The passage is mainly about __________.
A) the differences between carbon-14 and nitrogen-14
B) various uses of carbon
C) archeology and the study of ancient artifacts
D) one method of dating old objects
41. The expression “is left” in paragraph 3 could best be replaced by __________.
A) remains
B) has disappeared
C) changes
D) is gone
42. Which of the following is NOT true about carbon-14?
A) It is radioactive.
B) Its half-life is more than 5,000 years.
C) It and nitrogen always exist in equal amounts in any substance.
D) It can decay into nitrogen-14.
43. It can be inferred from the passage that if an item contains more carbon-14 than nitrogen-14, then the item
is __________.
A) too old to be age-dated with carbon-14
B) not as much as 5.570 years old
C) too radioactive to be used by archeologists
D) more than 5.570 years old

TEXT III
Questions 44-47
Read the following text and on your optic form, mark the alternative (A, B, C or D) which best completes the
statements or answers the questions. (4x1.5=6 marks)
THE MYTH OF THE ONLY CHILD
According to a recent report, only children are spoilt and generally more selfish. They find it difficult to get on with
others. The number of families with only one child is growing and the report warns that a child without brothers and
sisters will have ‘greater social isolation with teenagers who have a more selfish attitude to life.’
Isn’t it time to stop believing all these negative myths? Why do we believe that only children are aggressive and
bossy? Professor of Psychiatry, Sarah Wood, comments, ‘I have not seen any difference between the social skills of
only children and those with siblings.’ She believes, in fact, that only children quickly learn that they may get away
with being bossy at home, but it isn’t a good way to make friends out. She says that without siblings, only children
will generally try harder to be popular among friends and can be extremely sociable.
Another myth is the stereotype of the lonely only child with their head always in a book. Only children may prefer
more non-competitive, solitary activities, but it is not because they are always alone. In fact, an interest in reading,
stamp collecting and so on will probably depend on how their families bring them up. Middle and upper middle class
families are both more likely to have a single child, and more likely to encourage a love of reading. And, far from
being more dependent on their parents, only children seem to decide things by themselves.
Surely, there is no recipe for a happy child. What works for some won’t necessarily work for others - it is all about
what parents can do to make their child secure. If a couple does not have the time or money for more than one child, or
simply does not want more than one, isn’t it better to have just one happy child rather than an unhappy large family?
Charlotte Harris, 17 and an only child, says ‘Mum says that she is sorry for me because she has not given me a
brother or sister, but I think she feels much worse about it than I do. It really has never been that important to me. I
think, if you have good parents, then you will be just fine.’
44) Professor Sarah Wood believes that _____.
A) only children are aggressive and bossy
B) only children are not good at making friends
C) only children and children with siblings have the same social skills
D) children with siblings are more sociable than only children
45) Only children may enjoy reading because_____.
A) it helps them to be more dependent
B) they do not have any brothers or sisters to play with
C) they find it hard to talk to people
D) their parents have taught them to enjoy it
46) What does ‘solitary activities’ mean in paragraph 3?
A) activities that you do on your own
B) activities that you do with other people
C) outdoor activities
D) interesting activities
47) Charlotte Harris feels that being an only child____.
A) is something that her mum should apologize for
B) is not something that she worries about
C) is a really good idea
D) is worse than having siblings

Good morning everyone and welcome. My name is Donald Parker and I will be your supervisor while you are
here at AnswerCall.
First, let me give you some background information about our company. AnswerCall was set up in 1998, by
the current owner, Jane Westwood, after she had worked as a telephone operator herself. I’m sure many of you,
at some point, haven’t received adequate service from phone operators in some companies. However, where Jane
was working, the telephone operators always managed to provide good service to their callers. That gave her the
idea to set up her own company because she had the best chance to see how important a good phone service
could be.
By joining us, you will be joining a very successful company. Of course, we have had lots of positive
feedback about our very professional service- many callers don’t even realize that they are speaking to a call
center! In fact, the real key to our success is that our customers see us more as people they know very well
personally.
Also, before you start the training, here’s some advice. Of course, from your interviews, we know that you all
have practice at speaking on the phone at an appropriate volume. And you already know that if you use difficult
words, your caller may not understand you. But there is one thing that call center staff rarely do- that is, to think
about what the caller can’t see. Smiling and nodding. This may seem a waste of time, but it does make you
sound more friendly, which is exactly what we want. Now, your trainer will no doubt tell you more, so…..

Intervwr. Yes, I’m very pleased to welcome Greg and Marcia today about their life on the road. Good morning.
Greg
Good morning.
Marcia
Hello.
Intervwr. Thank you very much for taking time to be with us today. Firstly, tell me Greg. What influenced your
decision to live in a motor home, on the road, rather than in a house like most of us?
Greg
Well, we are keen travellers and because a lot of our work life is spent in the great outdoors
taking pictures of nature and wildlife, we found that it was the most sensible thing to do. We can
live a much more flexible life than before. It is great for our work as photographers because we
are always exploring new places and finding new things to photograph and on a personal level,
we feel it is a far more exciting way to live than always coming back to the same house.
Intervwr. Marcia, what about you? Is living in a caravan really as exciting as Greg describes?
Marcia
Well, yes. There is something very exciting about living on the road. The view outside your window is
changing all the time and you meet new people every day. You know, in cafés or the library or
wherever, and of course you still get to sleep in your own bed every night.
Intervwr. Which is great!
Marcia
Yeah. I think that much of the time it really is an amazing way of life.
Intervwr. I imagine you have to be very organized in order to get everything done in such a small place.
Greg
That’s true. Especially because we are both working, we are careful to keep things tidy and
organized inside the van. I certainly have to be tidier than I was before. I agree that I’m not an
organized person by nature, but here I am more careful. You also have to be organized with your
time, too. I mean we are with each other twenty-four seven. You know most of the time it is just
the two of us. We know that we have to be careful to give each other enough time and space.
Intervwr. Greg and Marcia. Thanks for joining us today and sharing your experiences with our listeners.

Ha ha ha… You must be joking. I’ve done that too often before. It usually lasts about a week
What about you?
Well, this year, I’m determined to get fit, so I’ve joined the local gym.
Really?
Yes. I’m getting a personal trainer and I’m going to go four times a week.
Are you sure about this? Doesn’t this seem a bit extreme? I mean the most exercise you
normally get is walking down the shops to get the newspaper.
57. You hear part of a weather forecast on the radio. What will the weather conditions be like tomorrow?
So, now the forecast for tomorrow, Tuesday the 14th. We will start with the Northeast of the country. The
terrible rain that we’ve had today will begin to ease by tomorrow morning. The worst of the rain will move
further south and it will feel slightly milder, but there is chance of some rain in the afternoon. When the rain stops
completely, the temperatures will drop. And I’m afraid we predict the coldest night of the year tomorrow night,
with temperatures falling to as low as minus 5 degrees Celsius. So, motorists should watch out for patches of ice
on the roads early on Wednesday morning.
