This 28page report is published as a PDF file (file size: 371KB). Canine Vaccine Resources Viewing of this file requires Adobe Acrobat Reader software. To download, visit www.adobe.com. AAHA has released a new edition of its vaccine guidelines for dogs. The 2006 AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines are available in their entirety through the following downloadable file. The executive summary of the guidelines is published in the March/April 2006 issues of Trends magazine and the Journal of The American Animal Hospital Association. AAHA released its first set of canine vaccination guidelines in 2003. The AAHA Canine Vaccine Task Force reconvened in 2005 to re-examine and revise the guidelines to reflect changes in the areas of canine vaccines. Factors that contributed to the updating of the guidelines include the rise of well-documented duration of immunity studies, industry support of extended revaccination intervals, and developing areas of shelter medicine. “To stay abreast of the changing landscape of vaccinations, it’s important for companion animal practitioners to review the updated guidelines,” said Daniel Aja, DVM, AAHA president. “We have gained new knowledge over the past three years – especially in the field of duration of immunity studies and shelter medicine. These important updates are well referenced and are reflected in the 2006 edition of our guidelines.” The 2006 AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines include detailed recommendations on the use of available vaccines, which are classified as core (universally recommended), noncore (optional), or not recommended. Revised sections of the document include those addressing serologic testing, vaccine adverse events, the vaccine licensing process and the medical and legal implications of vaccine medicine. The 28-page document contains a new section of guidelines that addresses vaccination of dogs entering or residing in animal shelter environments. Some of the core vaccination recommendations for shelter environments are slightly more aggressive than the guidelines presented for general veterinary practice. Other new content covered in the document includes a section highlighting the science of vaccine development, specifically such technologies as live vectored, subunit, gene-deleted, and deoxyribonucleic acid vaccines. The document also addresses vaccines granted a conditional license by the US Department of Agriculture Center for Veterinary Biologics, which includes rattlesnake and periodontal disease vaccines. The 2006 AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines are based on a combination of published and unpublished scientific studies, expert opinion and personal experience. The guidelines include a number of new citations that enhance and enforce the science on which the guidelines are based. The guidelines are intended to educate and inform the profession and help veterinarians make vaccine recommendations for individual dogs or in the case of a shelter situation, a population of dogs. The guidelines are not intended to be an AAHA standard of care. “For private practitioners, vaccinations certainly remain a medical decision and procedure that should be individualized based on the risk and lifestyle of the individual dog,” says Aja. “Factors to consider include the age, breed, health status, environment, lifestyle, and travel habits of the dog.” The 2006 AAHA Canine Vaccine Guidelines were developed by a task 4 force composed of practitioners, internists, infectious disease experts, immunologists and those committed to the growing concern of the particular needs of shelter medicine. Task force members include Michael A. Paul, DVM, chair; Leland E. Carmichael, DVM, PhD, DACVM; Henry Childers, DVM, DABVP; Susan Cotter, DVM, DACVIM; Autumn Davidson, DVM, DACVIM; Richard Ford, DVM, DACVIM; Kate F. Hurley, DVM, MPVM; James A. Roth, DVM, PhD, DACVM; Ronald D. Schultz, PhD, DACVM; Eileen Thacker, DVM, DACVM; and Link Welborn, DVM, DABVP. Boston's most famous dog enlivens hotel By ANDREW RYAN, Associated Press Writer The 94-year-old Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel spent $38 million on a facelift, refurbishing its soaring lobby with 21-foot-high Italian marble columns, gilded ceilings and Waterford crystal chandeliers. Yet the most popular upgrade didn't have anything to do with French antiques or the ornate arches in Peacock Alley, an entrance hall lined with eight-foot mirrors and Renaissance friezes. No — the most exciting thing to happen here lately was that the "Grande Dame of Boston" got a dog. Catie Copley, a 68-pound black lab, now greets guests with a heartfelt wag and a curious nose. The hound came to the hotel as a gimmick in 2004 to showcase the renovation and has breathed life into the once stuffy 5,000-square-foot lobby. "She's the world's most famous dog," said Sarah Trimmer, 11, on vacation from Bel Air, Md., who dragged her family to the Copley Plaza recently to give Catie a scratch. Catie may be the most famous hotel pet since a family of ducks starting riding the elevator at The Peabody hotel in Memphis, Tenn., in the 1930s. In Boston, some guests call three months in advance to book a walk with the pooch, dubbed a "canine ambassador" by the hotel. Tour guides on Boston's Duck Tours talk about Catie in the same breath as Trinity Church's architecture when describing Copley Square. Catie has her own business cards, an email address and sends care packages to other dogs staying at the hotel. She poses for photos, has been in Swedish dog magazines and is writing a book. She hobnobbed with Jane Fonda's dog, cuddled with actress Bernadette Peters and wagged her behind for actor Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward. "It's the most successful guest services program I've seen in my career," said Jon Creillin, manager of the Copley Plaza, where rooms range from $249 to $3,500 a night. Catie trained to be a seeing-eye dog but needed a "career change" when she developed cataracts, said Jim Carey, the concierge director who takes her home most nights. Two of Fairmont's Canadian hotels had successful canine ambassadors — including one pooch who was walked by Queen Elizabeth II, and the Copley Plaza decided to give it a try. Catie and Carey take a 20-minute subway ride to work each morning, with Catie lying in the same spot in the first car next to the driver. shrieked with delight, and new guests who hadn't heard of Catie looked befuddled. Carey made a quick hand command and Catie hustled back to her bed. She's not supposed to do that," said Carey, blushing like a proud father. Carey laughed about changing his title to "Catie Copley's manager," and he isn't entirely joking. He seriously sees a sitcom in Catie's future, and maybe a movie. The book — a mystery with the working title "Catie Copley Undercover" — is due out next spring from Boston's Godine Publishers. (Catie's co-author is a human, Deborah Kovacs.) Carey's real dream is to throw out the first ball at Fenway Park and run the bases with Catie before a cheering crowd. He met Red Sox owners at a function with the pooch recently and says he pitched the idea. "The power of the dog is unbelievable," Carey said. "One of these days they are going to call me and say 'Jim, tonight is your night.'" Catie closed her eyes and lay on the cool marble floor at his feet. ARTICLE Applied Animal Behaviour Science, Volume 13, Issues 1-2, November 1984, Pages 101-112 Erik Wilsson Ref 2: The following summary and commentary on this study is from: Coren, S. (2004) "How Dogs Think", pp.161-162. New York, Free Press. "Erik Wilsson of the Department of Zoology at Stockholm University studied six hundred German Shepard dog puppies and their interaction with their mothers during weaning, including the length of nursing, the number of inhibited bites, growls, and mouth threats that the mother used to prevent further nursing, and the mother's nibbling and licking of her pups. Some mothers used many more threatening behaviors to punish the pups when they tried to nurse. These punished puppies started to show passive submission behaviors by lying on their backs to be licked, and these submissive behaviors occurred earlier than they did in puppies whose mothers were not so threatening. Some of the mothers were extremely 6 The severity of the mother's behavior during the weaning process has a lasting effect on how her puppies will ultimately behave with humans. Puppies from litters that had been severely punished and threatened were less socially gregarious with people and were less likely to approach a stranger. The puppies from the gentler mothers were friendlier and also seemed less fearful in general. The puppies from the gentler mothers were also more likely to retrieve a tennis ball ..This is an important indicator of the ultimate trainability of the dog. .. [but Coren goes on to say..] .puppy is really learning his place in the social order and learning to play the role appropriate for his abilities and rank. Research shows that if puppies are reared under completely nonpunishing conditions up to week ten of their lives, they prove to be virtually impossible to train. Thus a balance must be struck." 2007 SPECIALTY SHOWS Submitted by Maryann Czerwinski, Point Show Coordinator For those of you that have not heard, Jersey Skylands LRC Inc. will then, to start, I need some committee people to oversee and work hold back-to-back Specialty Point Shows in 2007. with other club members for: The shows will be in conjunction with two All Breed Shows.
