Background:
I am a Wellcome intermediate Clinical Fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine working on a project called “drug-associated acute kidney injury, who gets it, when and
why?” My research focuses on the epidemiology of acute kidney injury in large population
databases, and the role that infections and medications play in its development. The aim is to
develop primary care interventions to modify prescribing and to reduce the risk of this important
and serious condition. In addition I work as an honorary consultant nephrologist at Brighton and
Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.
My other research interests concern the crossover between chronic kidney disease and
cardiovascular disease. I have been involved in many observational studies of arterial disease
including setting up and running a cohort of people with CKD, examining the role that measures of
arterial health play in the development of renal disease progression and mortality. I am a principle
investigator of the multi-centre British Heart Foundation funded EARNEST study which is
investigating the impact of kidney donation on cardiovascular health.
