University of Ontario Institute of Technology Office of the Associate Provost, Research Pedagogical Merit - Review Request Animal Care Committee (ACC) Date: To: From: UOIT Animal Care Committee (ACC) Under the CCAC guidelines, it is the responsibility of the Animal Care Committee (ACC) to ensure that no research or testing project or teaching program (including field studies) involving animals be commenced without prior ACC approval of a written animal use protocol. For teaching programs, a course number and an indication of whether the course has been reviewed with respect to the pedagogical merit of using live animals; institutional or departmental curriculum committees can be called upon to provide a review of pedagogical merit to the ACC. The CCAC requests that ACC's work closely with teachers to encourage them to carefully justify any use of animals and to use alternatives as much as possible. While this should be encouraged, the institution and its departments also have an important role to play by ensuring that, when curriculum reviews and other individual course reviews take place, the value of using animals for the various courses is thoroughly examined and documented. This documented review can then be provided to the ACC.
