SHS Young/Early Career Professionals Committee Charter
SHS Young/Early Career Professionals Committee Purpose
This committee will work to support the purposes of SHS through increased engagement and service to/of
Young/Early career professionals. This committee is intended to engage healthcare systems improvement
professionals that are in the early years of their careers by providing targeted professional development
opportunities. The objectives of the SHS Young/Early Career Professionals committee will be:
- To strengthen young/early career relationships with healthcare systems engineering and
process improvement body at large by supporting their transition
- To create personal and professional growth opportunities, including leadership development
for young/early career professionals
- To increase awareness of these young/early career professionals to the healthcare community
through recognition
Time Commitment
The Committee meets at least once a month via telephone conference calls and more often if necessary
based upon the scope of work. Meetings are scheduled by the Chair of the Young/Early Career
Professionals Committee based on input from the committee members. SHS board liaisons also
participate on monthly calls. Committee projects average about 1 hour per week or less.
2015-2016 SHS YP Committee Goals
The following are some of the activities planned for the years 2015 and 2016
1. Build the basic infrastructure needed to support the Young/Early Career Professionals group
within SHS.
a. Include age and/or option to allow members to self-identify themselves as young or early
career professionals in the SHS membership and conference registration form
b. Develop financial models (membership discount structure?) to incentivize students to
sign up for professional membership.
c. Operationalize the SHS Young/Early Career Professionals Committee
i. Recruit Volunteers
ii. Develop an operating plan and regular meeting structure
d. Dedicated web-page specific to young/early career professionals
2. Collaborate with other committees to support/develop initiatives that are focused on Young
Professionals
a. Collaborate with the Conference Committee to organize the Young Professionals
program at the annual conference
i. Dedicated sessions for YP/EC professionals
ii. Special Career development presentation
iii. Offer recruitment opportunities
iv. Mentoring Program
v. Competitions for YP/EC professionals
b. Collaborate with Education Committee to host at least one webinar where young
professionals present their work or presentation topic is of interest to young professionals
c. Collaborate with the Content and Connections Committee to
i. Create a section on young professionals in the newsletter that highlights articles
of interest to young professionals, recognizes young professionals and also
include a special article written by one of the young professionals
ii. Host twitter chats and other big discussion forums that generate interest in
participating in the SHS YP group
d. Collaborate with Academic and Student Committee to
i. Coordinate the transition of students to professionals members through focused
marketing
ii. Participate in the student mentoring program
iii. Develop profiles for young professionals and post on website
iv. Offer tips to students on resume writing, jobs in healthcare, as students can relate
to this group
e. Collaborate with Recognition Committee to
i. Recognize “new” young professional members
ii. Identify nominations for awards such as “New Faces of Engineering”
