3 Definitions
Veterinary guidelines – advice received directly from veterinarians, or literature recommended by veterinarians or providers accredited to assess this unit standard.
On-farm procedures
– the verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for pig health, welfare, and management.

Element 1
Move and restrain sow or boar in accordance with the welfare code, under supervision.
Performance criteria
1.1 Sow or boar is moved with minimal stress, without injury to the sow, boar, or handler(s), and in accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.2 Sow or boar is restrained securely with minimal stress, without injury to the sow, boar or handler(s), and in accordance with on-farm procedures.
1.3 Safety precautions are observed at all times when handling and moving sows and boars.
Element 2
Range use of stock board, handler's position in relation to animal.
Apply a nose ring to a sow or boar in accordance with the welfare code, under supervision.
Performance criteria
2.1 Snout is pierced in accordance with on-farm procedures and the welfare code, with minimal stress and without injury to sow, boar, or handler(s).
Range hard skin at top of snout, hard skin between nostrils.
2.2 Ring is inserted through hole and securely fixed in accordance with the welfare code.
2.3 The animal is checked to determine if the pierced site is infected, in accordance with on-farm procedures.
2.4 If infected, the pierced site is identified and treated in accordance with on-farm procedures and veterinary guidelines.
Range antiseptic cream, antibiotic injection.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
