Sensory input surrounds us. Just as intellectual abilities vary from child to child, sensory processing abilities also vary widely. Some children with a sensory processing disorder are unable to tune out all the information their bodies perceive, while others are unable to perceive some of the information that they need to do their schoolwork. Imagine all the sensory input that must be processed to dynamically engage in daily activities. Sensory processing is the reason that people can perceive and use this information while maintaining a focused state of alertness. A few children will respond to minor changes in the environment or schedule while others may need more extensive ‘Sensory Strategies’ which may include quiet times away from the class, increased movement opportunities, oral motor activities, and/or ‘heavy work’ opportunities incorporated in the their daily routines. In this webinar, OT’s, PT’s, and SLP’s will learn to identify sensory processing disorder modulation subtypes; sensory overresponsivity (SOR), sensory under responsivity (SUR), and sensory seeking/craving. Participants will learn creative and practical sensory strategies to imbed into a sensory diet using alerting, modulating, and calming techniques. Solutions will target helping children at home and school to increase attention, improve sensory-related behavior, support organizational skills, foster self esteem, and facilitate sustained active engagement in order to enable success in childhood occupations. OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course the participant will be able to: 1. Differentiate between 3 subtypes of sensory modulation disorder 2. Learn about signs & symptoms of dysfunction in sensory systems 3. Distinguish between sensory related behavior and behavioral tantrums 4. Develop a repertoire of sensory strategies that facilitate success in childhood occupations 5. Implement sensory calming, alerting, and modulating techniques in home and school environments ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Jenny L.
