The Physiology of Exercise – Clinical Admission Requirements Admission to the School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness and the Graduate Program in the Physiology of Exercise (Research or Clinical), a prospective student will meet the following requirements: 1) Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology, exercise science, or related field from an accredited college or university having a background in SOME or ALL the following academic topics, including both lectures and labs: Mathematics Anatomy Physics Physiology Biology Exercise Physiology General, Genetics, Molecular and/or other topics Chemistry General, Organic, Biochemistry and/or other topics And SOME or ALL of the following application courses, including both lectures and labs: Nutrition Kinesiology Sports Nutrition Biomechanics Metabolism Motor Learning Pharmacology Motor Development Exercise Testing and Prescription Electrocardiogram (EKG) Exercise in Special Populations Please note – often times the course title doesn’t adequately identify a large emphasis in a particular topic; a letter of reference, resume/CV, biography can often help emphasize these points January 2015 2) “Competitive” cumulative grade point average (GPA) for undergraduate studies. 3) "Satisfactory” GRE score (http://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general/scores/understand/). Typically a “competitive” cumulative GPA greater than 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and “satisfactory” GRE are scores above the 50th percentile (for Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing). However, a GPA/GRE less than a 3.0/50th percentile MAY be considered acceptable in a few circumstances, e.g.: a) GRE scores well above average (>50th percentile); b) cumulative GPA greater than a 3.0 on the last 60 hrs (of 120 credit hours of a Bachelor’s degree; c) total science GPA greater than a 3.0; -and/or d) advanced/excellent experience(s) 4) Up to a two-page typed statement of purpose. This statement may illustrate information about your background, preparation for graduate education, and experience that makes you a good candidate for the specific Program. However, this statement MUST indicate how this degree will help you to achieve your specific career goals. Please note – for the research concentration it is advisable to indicate relevant potential research directions for your thesis research 5) Resume (or curriculum vita) of your educational background and professional volunteer and/or work experience. 6) Three (3) letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to your qualifications for graduate education and in your chosen field – it is expected that no less than two (2) letters will be from an academic faculty member. 7) Complete all additional Ohio University requirements: a. application, available at http://www.ohio.edu/graduate/apply.cfm b. pay University application fee. A spring start date may be feasible for some students (research and clinical) but the completed application is due no later than November 1st. International students also must present TOEFL scores. A minimum of 575 (paper) or 89 (IBT) is required for consideration. An IELTS score of 6.5 across all bands is also accepted - inquire at Graduate Student Services. International students must apply by February 15 (fall start date), August 1 (spring start date), or December 1 (summer starts date). Funding Financial assistance is available.
