His best friend L/Sgt Bill Gibson of 6 Troop Commandoes, in his last letter to his father, written on the 24th March 1942, encapsulated the feelings of those who believed they would not survive, but were determined nevertheless to see the job through to the end. Writing in the realization that his words would only be read in the event of his death, he told his Dad that even though they knew the job was “virtually suicide”, he and his great pal L/Sgt Peter Harkness, realised their sacrifice would be for a worthwhile cause, he wrote: “Peter and I will be together, our task is very important and just a wee bit dangerous, but if we can hold Jerry off it will mean the saving of lives of a lot of our pals. It seems peculiar to be writing this, we’ve just finished tea and God’s lovely sunshine is streaming through the portholes. We’ve been on deck sunbathing all day. Peter is very red as I am. Well Dad, dearest I will close now, don’t be too unhappy, remember what you always told me, keep you chin up. I’ll have done what chance has made my duty, and I can only hope that by lying down my life the generations to come might in some way remember us and benefit by what we have done”. For fuller details read “The Storming of St Nazaire” by J G Dorrain. Operation Chariot In 1942 the threat to shipping in the North Atlantic reached crisis point. Great German ships like the Tirpitz had nowhere on the Atlantic seaboard for refit or repairs except “Normandie” docks at St Nazaire. Destroy them and the Tirpitz would be neutralized. The purpose of the raid was to destroy the docks to stop German ships using it for repairs. The honour of being first to shape the course for the old entrance quayside fell upon No 4 in the column, this being Lt Bill Tillie’s ML268. Petty Officer Sam Wallace had been assigned when members of the Weymouth Base Staff were added to the force. She carried a party of 7 additions to Newman’s HW Reserve and two parties of 5 briefed to operate up by bridge “M”. Harry Pennington, with 4 other ranks were directed to blow up the bridge itself, while Lt Morgan Jenkins, plus 4 others from 6 Troop were to provide the cover. The boat was heavily hit and set ablaze some short way off “Campbelltown’s” stern. Her petrol tank ruptured, she blew up shortly thereafter, killing half her crew and almost all the Commandoes she carried. Lt Tillie survived, Lt Pennington and his whole team were killed. Lt Morgan Jenkins, whose only fear was water, was reported to have said, “Well, I suppose we’re for the drink”, before he was gone and with him all his boys of 6 Troop including Bill Gibson and his pal Peter Harkness. Of the 17 soldiers, only 2 made it to the shore alive. ----------------------------------------------------HARRISON In memory of Pte John William Harrison, 3131443 – Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders – 2 Bn who died age 22 on 10th February 1941 Son of Frederick Charles and Euphemia Harrison of Cowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne.
