This post is available immediately until 4th August 2015. This post is based in Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Larbert which is a state of the art modern Acute Hospital. The successful candidate will join our team of five consultants and other doctors in training. Candidates will be expected to work within the Acute Medicine team and provide support for emergency admissions and ward patients. The post will enable the post holder to gain excellent exposure to a full range of core medicine. NHS Forth Valley provides acute services for a population of 280,000 people in Central Scotland. Acute services were centralised onto a single site at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in July 2011. Forth Valley is a particularly attractive area in which to live and work with a wide range of housing, excellent state and private schooling and extensive sport and leisure facilities. Falkirk and Stirling have good motorway and railway links to the nearby centres of both Edinburgh and Glasgow while the Scottish mountains are a short distance to the north. The area benefits from a highly skilled and enthusiastic nursing team, led by charge nurse Norma Pringle, who strongly supports the on call teams working in this area, Nursing triage includes point of entry severity scoring using a pilot of the National Early Warning Score (NEWS). Electrocardiography, plain film radiography and venesection or cannulation are also undertaken where required prior to medical review. The CAU LAS doctor is an important member of staff, and crucial to the smooth running of the unit. The duties incude Clerking of new patients referred to General Medicine or Ageing and Health Practical procedures Promptly reviewing unwell patients, or those triggering NEWS Ensuring discharge letters are completed in a timely fashion Participating in ward safety meetings and morbidity/mortality meetings Although this is a LAS post, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved with quality improvement, and attend teaching (where time allows) You will be working under the supervision of a Consultant Acute Physician Acute Medicine at NHS Forth Valley The unit was the first in Scotland to introduce the new National Early Warning System (NEWS), which having been successfully piloted in AAU, has been introduced across all acute services in NHS Forth Valley. We benefit hugely from a highly skilled and motivated IT support team, who are working cooperatively with us to develop innovative tools to support capacity planning and patient tracking. These include an electronic handover system, touch-sensitive smart boards, and a capacity dashboard tool. We are actively involved in Patient Safety and Improvement initiatives in areas such as cardiac arrest reduction, reliable recognition and rescue of deteriorating patients, medicines reconciliation, and the development of care bundles for common pathologies presenting to acute medicine. The NHS Forth Valley AAU/CAU structured approach to the deteriorating patient has recently been adapted as the national approach, and published in the journal BMJ Qual Saf. There are also regular Acute Medicine Morbidity and Mortality meetings, and the Acute Physicians lead the hospital wide Morbidity and Mortality meetings. 6 The consultant Acute Physicians are also involved in a range of work related to proactive capacity planning, winter pressures and escalation policies. Finally the Acute Physician team are developing Ambulatory Care services for a range of appropriate conditions in line with national best practice The Acute Care Team senior members are 1 Clinical Director for Acute and Emergency Services (Dr Martyn Hawkins) 6 Consultants in Acute Medicine (Drs Daniel Beckett, Jennifer Gray, Leah Leitch, Catherine MacLean, Andrea Strang and David Thetford) 1 Service Manager (Deirdre Anderson) 1 Nurse Consultant (Sharon Oswald) 1 Lead Nurse for Emergency and In-patient Services (Sarah Dickie) 2 Lead Advance Nurse Practitioners (Margaret Marshall and Marjory Gardiner) The Acute Care Team is supported by an excellent Fastrack Occupational and Physiotherapy Assessment Team, lead by Kenneth Slater. We are also fortunate to have a highly motivated unit pharmacy team. This core team is supplemented by “on call” teams from Medicine, Ageing and Health, Surgery and Surgical Specialties. The Medical Specialties - cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology and endocrinology each provide a subspecialty “Physician of the Week” service Mon-Fri 0900-1700. Patients are allocated to medical specialty within the Acute Medicine Unit and specialty teams visit the unit daily to pick up these patients. The libraries contain: current medical text books for the major specialties medical journals on subscription a comprehensive stock of teaching Internet access portable colour laptop PC for use with overhead projection There are a comprehensive clinical skills teaching suite for the teaching of resuscitation techniques and other procedural skills. The Scottish Simulation Centre is located within the hospital. There are weekly postgraduate meetings involving all specialties. There are regular evening postgraduate medical meetings in the hospital for both hospital and primary care medical staff. Glasgow and Edinburgh with their Royal Colleges, University medical schools and postgraduate facilities are within easy reach. 7 CRITERIA FOR THE POST Full General Medical Council Registration Completion of FY1 year Appropriate practical skills Excellent communication skills, both written and oral Ability to work well within a team Demonstrable organisational and time management skills A genuine interest in the specialty CONTRACTUAL DETAILS Contracted activities for this appointment will be defined and agreed with the post holder in discussion with the Lead Consultant of the Acute Medical Unit The post holder will be professionally responsible to the Associate Medical Director for the Medical Unit and managerially responsible to the General Manager of the Medical Unit. The posts will be based in Forth Valley Royal Hospital. The LAS doctor post is available on a full-time basis but the Board welcomes applications from individuals who are unable to undertake a full time commitment and who may wish to work on either a part-time or job share basis. The appointment will be subject to the new terms and conditions of service for Doctors in Training. The successful candidate will be required to undergo satisfactory pre-employment screening before a formal appointment may be made. The employment is subject to one calendar month’s written notice on either side.
