This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector.

People credited with this unit standard are able to: maintain the supply of scrap baskets; transport scrap baskets to the electric arc furnace; load charge into the electric arc furnace; and perform ancillary crane operations in support of electric arc furnace operations.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Maintain the supply of scrap baskets.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The provision of baskets of scrap to the electric arc furnace ensures that the continuity of electric arc furnace operations is maintained.

1.2 The supply of empty scrap baskets to the loading facility ensures that the supply of baskets to be loaded is maintained.

Outcome 2

Transport scrap baskets to the electric arc furnace.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Scrap baskets are provided to the electric arc furnace in a timely manner to ensure that the continuity of arc furnace operations is maintained.

2.2 The spatial position of scrap baskets during transit ensures the safety of personnel and plant.

Outcome 3

Load charge into the electric arc furnace.

Evidence requirements

3.1 The release of material into the furnace is performed in a manner that recognises the problems of placement in respect of liquid metal losses and/or explosive reactions.

Range placement may include but is not limited to – dry charges, wet charges, hot metal charges; evidence of two is required.

Outcome 4

Perform ancillary crane operations in support of electric arc furnace operations.

Evidence requirements

4.1 Ancillary crane operations are performed in accordance with operational requirements and maintain continuity of arc furnace operations.

Range ancillary crane operations include but are not limited to – furnace roofs, electrodes, deltas, consumables.

4.2 Performance of ancillary crane operations accords with maintenance requirements and ensures adherence to maintenance schedules.
