Part 1 Deformation





Distinguish among compression, tension and shear stress and describe ways in
which rock can respond to each stress.
Distinguish between a joint and a fault, and give examples.
Distinguish between brittle and ductile deformation, and explain how they are
related to depth
Sketch and describe the concepts of strike, dip, footwall, and hanging wall.
Be able to distinguish the kinds of faults:
o Normal dip slip, reverse dip slip, thrust dip slip
o Right lateral strike slip, left-lateral strike slip
 Distinguish between a horst and a graben
 Sketch a cross section of an anticline, syncline, and monocline.
 Describe a dome and a basin.
 Sketch a fold showing its hinge, limb, and axial surface, and summarize how







the
orientation of these features can vary.
Know how anticlines, synclines, both plunging and non-plunging, leave patterns
on the surface.
Know the difference between structure and topography
Be able to interpret a block diagram
Be able to interpret a geologic map
Sketch or describe a fault block and how movement on normal faults can be
accompanied by tilting of layers.
Know where fault block mountains form in the United States
Identify joints, faults, folds, and tilted rock layers in a landscape.
Part 2 Metamorphic Rocks






Summarize how cleavage and foliation are expressed in metamorphic rocks.
Describe the changes sandstone, shale, and limestone undergo and the
metamorphic rocks they become as they are metamorphosed.
Describe the changes mafic and felsic igneous rocks undergo and the
metamorphic rocks they become as they are metamorphosed.
Describe the origin of hornfels, serpentinite, and soapstone
Summarize causes and tectonic settings of regional, contact, fault, and
hydrothermal metamorphism.
Identify and explain the formation of slickensides, fault gouge, and fault breccia
