PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release June 9, 2014 Contact: Mary Dehnert Marketing & Communication Coordinator (336) 288-2007 GREENSBORO –Canterbury School graduated 46 8th graders on Friday, June 6th in a beautiful ceremony in the school’s Phillips Chapel. The morning began with a bagpiper welcoming families and guests on campus. The guests proceeded to Phillips Chapel where they awaited the Class of 2014 who processed into the building to the sounds of a brass quintet from UNCG. The service began with a hymn and a lesson read by Evan Mellon, a member of the Class of 2014. Next Shami Chideya, also a member of the Class of 2014, introduced the commencement speaker, middle school teacher Carolyn Lamkins. Mrs. Lamkins spoke about the things that the students had taught her over the years such as __ and __. Robbie Hutchison, the class president, then presented a gift to the school from this year’s graduating class. The students gave a new patio outside of Haley Athletic Center for future students, staff and parents to enjoy. Kim Markham, middle school math teacher, then presented the Rosalyn Tanner Orr Award for Teaching Excellence to third grade teacher Penny Summers. This award is given each year to a member of the faculty who excels in teaching and meets the individual needs of each and every student. Mr. David Skeen, Middle School Director, awarded the Canterbury Service Award to 8th grader Claudia Mohamed. Claudia has worked the last several years with Red Dog Farm and even created a PreKindergarten fundraiser walk that provides food and other items for the animal shelter. Janet Mintz, middle school Spanish teacher, then awarded the Sterling P. Miller Award to 8th grader Ashley Brown. This award is given each year to the 8th grader who exemplifies the love and exuberance for Canterbury School so evident in Mr. Miller, the first Head of School of Canterbury. Mr. Scott Faircloth, President of the Board of Trustees, then granted the authority for Mr. Burns Jones, Head of School, to confer diplomas on the 46 graduates. The ceremony ended with the cherished Canterbury tradition of 2nd grade chapel buddies singing a farewell blessing to the graduates as they prepared to march out of Phillips Chapel as alumni.
