2015 Charles H. Townes Graduate Student Fellowship The Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences (CTNS) is pleased to announce the 2015 competition for the Charles H. Townes Graduate Student Fellowship. The purpose of the Townes Fellowship is to publicly recognize and offer modest financial support to doctoral students of the Graduate Theological Union who have demonstrated the clear ability to do highly promising research on issues related to theology and science. The selection is based on academic excellence, and students in any area of the Graduate Theological Union doctoral program whose research focuses on theology and science are eligible to apply. To apply please submit a copy of your curriculum vitae, a sample of your best writing in theology and science, and a statement of 1000 words about your doctoral research topic and methodology. Students must have completed the general comprehensive exams to be eligible to apply. Applications must be received by 5:00pm, Friday, April 17 to be considered for the award. The winner or winners of the 2015 Townes Fellowship will be announced at the close of the 2015 J.K. Russell Research Fellowship Conference, “More than Information: A Christian Critique of a New Dualism,” with Dr. Noreen Herzfeld, which will be held on Saturday, April 25, 1:00-5:00pm, in the Dinner Board Room of the Graduate Theological Union Library, 2400 Ridge Road, Berkeley. Townes, who recently passed away at the age of 99, was a Nobel Laureate and Professor of Physics in the Graduate School, University of California, Berkeley. He was very active in the field of science and religion, winning the Templeton Prize in 2005. A longtime supporter of CTNS, Dr. Townes was a member of CTNS’s board of directors for 25 years.
