Gear for Klondike Derby
Clothing -- The Scouts also need good outdoor winter clothing, such as Polypro long johns, gloves, hats,
warm coats, multiple pairs of socks, good high-top waterproof boots, rain gear, etc... Basically to be
prepared for a long cold weekend in cold, wet, snow. The best idea is to dress in layers, so that layers can
be taken off when you're hot from working or more layers can be put on if you're cold.
Always wear Clothing that is appropriate for the weather.
NO COTTON! Cotton holds moisture and stays wet, it is difficult to dry. It is cold when wet, unlike
wool or artificial fibers.
What is the last thing to dry, in a cloths dryer? Cotton jeans and towels!
Boots, high-top waterproof snow boots (absolutely no tennis shoes or low top type shoe)
Socks (enough pair of socks on so that feet will be warm; at least one pair should be wool)
Stocking hat or ‘Beanie’, Polypro/Wool or similar
Gloves or mittens, wool or fleece or ski gloves (two pair at least)
Glove liners with waterproof over-mittens are also good
Long underwear, Polypro (top & bottom) – (two pairs)
Polypro or Wool Long sleeve shirt (two pair)
Polypro or Wool sweater (two), or a vest and a sweater
Long pants (wool preferred) or bib type ski-overalls OK, fleece pants OK (two pair)
Gaiters (boot-to-pants covers) optional but help keep socks & boots and the lower legs dry
Insulated parka or coat with hood (ski jacket OK but some may be too hot)
Note: Wearing a baseball cap while wearing a hooded jacket will prevent “blind-siding”
when turning your head to the side.
General Sunglasses or ski goggles
Lip balm and sunscreen
Snowshoes (if available)
Garbage bags (pack liners and for putting wet items in, and keeping dry things from getting wet)
Backpack & Pack cover or large trash bag
Sleeping bag with optional fleece bag liner
Sleeping pad, (heavy duty closed cell foam or 1½” thick self inflating air mattress or better)
Ground cloth (tarp) for inside shelter
Camp pillow
Extra Blanket if wanted
Headlamp or Flashlight
Mess kit and plastic “silverware”
Canteen or water bottle (At night, store upside-down under the snow (MARK the spot!) water freezes from the top down)
At least 2 liters of water
Totin’ Chit in a pocket
Fireman Chit in a pocket
Pocketknife
Personal Overnight Camping Gear, Toiletries kit
*Sweat shirt and pants
*T-shirt
*Socks
*Stocking hat
*These clothes are to be worn only when sleeping…
Do not use damp or wet day clothes for sleeping.
Day Pack
**Poncho
**1 pair socks (for when feet get wet and cold, two pair if you want)
**1 liter of water
**Two hot chocolate packets in coat pocket
**6 ft. length of rope, whipped
**1 triangular bandage or large bandanna
**Must be with each scout during the Klondike Derby
An insulated mug with a lid (this will keep a lunch warmer longer than a regular bowl)
Food for noon meal on Saturday (must be something that only requires the addition of boiling water to
complete – you must have something warm for lunch)
Extra snacks to munch on during the day (not too much though)
Notes on staying warm.
Layers are the key to staying warm during the winter.
As you warm up through activity, you can take clothes off to keep from sweating too much.
Likewise, when you stop you can then add clothes to warm up again.
If you get wet, either through sweating or any other way, you will get cold.
You will stay cold as long as you remain wet...
You must do whatever you can to keep from getting wet.
DO NOT bundle up in the full outdoor clothing, for the long vehicle ride to the Klondike Derby site.
This causes overheating or sweating.
DO restrain from getting into deep snow and snowball fights for a half hour after arrival to the site.
The reason for this is that the clothing is warm from the car, and snow will readily melt, wetting
the clothing.
Cold Weather Clothing... remember - NO COTTON!
The GOAL of Clothing is to have two complete sets of key items for wearing in the snow and one set of
non-snow clothing (for sleeping) in a dry bag.
The Scoutmasters goal is to keep the Scout - WARM and DRY, and to have flexibility by suggesting
which items to wear at any one time, and knowing that he has them.
However, as we all know bringing extra under shorts is nice, but will they be used?
Remember: There is no such thing as bad weather, just poor choices in clothing.
