Winter Storm Supply Kit Ice! Snow! High winds! These weather conditions can quickly combine to create a deadly winter storm. Dangerous driving conditions and power outages may mean that your family will have to stay at home for several days without heat. Therefore, it is important to plan ahead and create an emergency weather kit that includes at least three days worth of supplies. Of all the items to include in the kit, the most important is warm clothing. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), we have between four and eight winter storms in our area each year. These winter storms may include blizzard conditions, heavy snow, ice storms, lake-effect snow, or winter weather. In addition, our area may have more than one abnormally cold day that includes extreme cold and wind chill. If you do have to go outside or if the power goes out, wearing warm clothing can protect you and your family from this dangerous cold weather. It is important to have clothing, hats, scarves, and mittens for everyone in the house. Dressing in several layers of loose fitting, lightweight clothing is better than wearing one heavy layer. Also, mittens are warmer than gloves. Exposure to extreme cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia. Both are dangerous medical conditions that may require a trip to the hospital. Be sure to have plenty of clothing to keep everyone warm! Winter storms can be deadly, so it is important to plan ahead and be ready. Including warm clothing in your emergency weather kit is the best thing you can do to help keep your family safe!
