2009 Collection of Cambridge Journals Digital Archives adds to over a century of research
Cambridge Journals, a division of Cambridge University Press (CUP), has completed the 2009
Collection of its Digital Archives, adding to over a century of digitised research material. Over 3.3
million pages are now available in the 2009 Collection, the vast majority of which have never been
available online before.

Wiley-Blackwell and Australian Psychological Society announce publishing partnership
STM and scholarly publisher Wiley-Blackwell has announced a publishing partnership with the
Australian Psychological Society (APS). Under the deal, Wiley-Blackwell will publish three APS
flagship journals – Australian Journal of Psychology, Australian Psychologist and Clinical
Psychologist – from 2011.

Baker & Taylor partners with EBSCO Publishing to make book and multimedia data available via
EDS
Electronic research databases provider EBSCO Publishing has announced a partnership with
information services company Baker & Taylor, Inc. The new partnership will make rich book and
multimedia data from Baker & Taylor available as part of EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). EDS is
designed to provide a single entry point and fast access to a library’s entire collection - including
local loading of the OPAC.

Wiley announces publishing partnership with The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society
Publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc. has announced a new publishing partnership with The Minerals,
Metals & Materials Society (TMS). Under the deal, Wiley will publish, on behalf of TMS, books and
resources encompassing the entire range of materials science and engineering, from minerals
processing and primary metals production to basic research and the advanced applications of
materials.

SAE International and Findlay Media set to launch new European Automotive Design publication
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International has partnered with UK-based Findlay Media
for a new publication focusing on the design and engineering elements of the automotive industry.
Automotive Design magazine, a collaborative project between SAE International and Findlay Media,
will provide its 20,000 audience of Europe wide design engineers a cross section of technology based
case studies and features.

Springer adds journal with 150-year tradition to social sciences portfolio
STM publisher Springer has announced a partnership with the Anthropological Society of Paris to
publish the latter's scientific journal Bulletins et mémoires de la Société d'Anthropologie de Paris.
The journal claims to be the oldest journal on biological anthropology. It has been published by the
society itself since 1859, when it was launched parallel to the founding of the Anthropological
Society of Paris.

AFS signs MoA with US Automotive Materials Partnership to include USAMP Data in CADS
The American Foundry Society (AFS) has signed a memorandum of agreement with the United States
Automotive Materials Partnership LLC (USAMP). Under the agreement, the data contained in
USAMP's Automotive Lightweight Materials database will be made available to AFS for inclusion in
the AFS online database Casting Alloy Data Search (CADS).

BMJ Group bags contract for Technology Assessment Reviews for health bodies
The BMJ Evidence Centre, part of the BMJ Group, has been awarded a contract by the National
Institute for Health Research for Technology Assessment Reviews (TARs). TARs are commissioned to
meet the urgent needs of national NHS decision-making bodies and policy customers, such as the
National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The TARs will be produced by the BMJ
Evidence Centre in conjunction with the Matrix Knowledge Group.

MEDai, Shared Health partner to provide robust health information exchange platform
Shared Health, Inc., a public/private health information exchange (HIE), has partnered with health
information provider MEDai, Inc., part of STM publisher Elsevier, to provide a rich, interoperable,
clinically relevant HIE platform to the state of Tennessee. This partnership seeks to deliver solutions
and technologies that support clinical excellence and operating efficiencies. It comes at a time
when stimulus funding is being leveraged to create an information exchange that helps drive
meaningful use of healthcare information technology and care improvement across the healthcare
continuum.

Canon Communications acquires four RBI titles
B2B publisher and digital media firm Canon Communications LLC, part of Apprise Media LLC, has
announced a definitive agreement to acquire four key media brands serving the advanced design
engineering sector in the US, Asia, and Europe. Included in the purchase from Reed Business
Information-US (RBI) are the worldwide assets of Electronic Design News (EDN), Design News, Test &
Measurement World and Packaging Digest. This transaction is expected to reinforce Canon’s leading
position in the advanced manufacturing sector worldwide in exhibitions, publications, and digital
media. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Avamar Center for Endoscopy selects WK Health’s ProVation Medical Software for procedure
documentation and coding
Medical information provider Wolters Kluwer Health (WK Health) has announced that Avamar Center
for Endoscopy has selected its ProVation MD software for gastroenterology procedure documentation
and coding. ProVation MD software, available in a full range of medical specialties, replaces

Pathway Genomics to feature Harvard health content in genetic test reports
Pathway Genomics, a privately held, venture-backed company, has announced an agreement with
StayWell Consumer Health Publishing to feature a suite of consumer health information in Pathway’s
Genetic Health Reports. Content developed by Harvard Medical School and Harvard Health
Publications will be added to provide Pathway customers with access to information about many
aspects of a medical condition. The content is projected to represent the expertise of 8,000
Harvard faculty physicians and world-renowned affiliated hospitals.

Thieme ties up with subito to deliver content from e-books
STM publisher Thieme Publishing Group and library services firm subito have initiated a project to
jointly develop a document delivery system for e-books. With the latest alliance, university libraries
can make digital book content from Thieme available on reading terminals, and personnel from
universities and research institutions can integrate it into their intranets and learning platforms.
subito has made its infrastructure available for delivering book content direct from the publisher.

Bowker releases new version of Syndetics - Syndetics Plus
Bibliographic information provider Bowker, a business unit of ProQuest, has released a new version
of Syndetics, a resource valued by librarians for its ability to enhance the bibliographic content
found in library online catalogues. The new Syndetics Plus combines more than 11 million content
enrichment elements with advanced widget technology to seamlessly integrate this data within a
library’s OPAC.

New technical publication on contaminated sediments
Publisher ASTM International has announced the launch of a new publication, STP 1518,
Contaminated Sediments: Sustainable Management and Remediation. The publication features 23
peer-reviewed papers that provide the latest global information on environmentally sound solutions
to the sustainable management and remediation of contaminated sediments.

'PLoS Medicine' publishes paper on guidelines for health research reporting
Open access journal PLoS Medicine has published a paper in its latest issue, which is expected to
provide a substantial new resource for the developers of guidelines of the reporting of health
research. The authors note that if reporting guidelines are to be useful and more widely
disseminated, they need to be developed using robust and widely accepted methodologies.

Data quality and methodology key concerns in higher education rankings, says Thomson Reuters
study
Information services provider Thomson Reuters has announced the results of a worldwide survey of
opinion leaders at key research institutions. The survey report, New Outlooks on Institutional
Profiles, captures opinions from the global academic community on the most relevant indicators of
organisational competence and quality, as well as which indicators they consider important and
what they think is wrong with previous methods.

Library Assessment Conference 2010 call for proposals extended to Feb 26
The Association of Research Libraries (ARL), the University of Virginia Library, the University of
Washington Libraries, and the Conference Planning Committee have extended the call for proposals
for the 2010 Library Assessment Conference up to February 26. The event, called ‘Building

Elsevier wins four awards and six honorable mentions at the 2009 PROSE Awards
STM publisher Elsevier has announced that it has won four major awards and six honorable mentions
from the Professional and Scholarly Publishing (PSP) Division of the Association of American
Publishers (AAP). The PROSE awards were named by a panel of 16 judges representing PSP member
companies such as Wiley-Blackwell and Harvard University Press, as well as representatives from
major educational institutions and libraries such as University of Toronto and Columbia University.

that ‘critical perspectives on international business’ has won its inaugural Best New Journal award.
Free access was given for 16 eligible Emerald journals and the winner was decided by open vote. In
total, over 1000 votes were cast.

Atypon names Gordon Tibbitts as President
Information services provider Atypon Systems, Inc. has announced that Gordon Tibbitts has joined
the company as President, reporting to CEO Georgios Papadopoulos. Tibbitts joins Atypon after
serving as CEO of Berkeley Electronic Press. Prior to Berkeley Electronic Press, Tibbitts served as
President of Blackwell Publishing (now Wiley-Blackwell) for seven years, during which time he

Open Book Alliance flays amended Google Books settlement
The Open Book Alliance (OBA) has issued a statement in response to Google's request for an
amended Google Books Settlement approval. The OBA and other objectors - including the US
Department of Justice, authors, publishers, academics, libraries and privacy advocates from around
the world - have collectively made the case for rejection of the amended settlement agreement
proposed by Google, the Association of American Publishers and the Authors Guild. Contrary to what
Google's attorneys say, the amended settlement will still offer the company exclusive access to
books it has illegally scanned to the detriment of consumers, authors and competition, says the OBA
statement.

Library groups, EFF support of first sale doctrine in US legal battle
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and a coalition of public interest and consumer groups
have urged a US federal appeals court to preserve consumers' rights and the first sale doctrine in a
battle over an Internet auction of used computer software. The EFF was joined by the Association of
Research Libraries, the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research
Libraries, Consumer Federation of America, US Public Interest Research Group and Public
Knowledge. The groups are supporting Timothy Vernor, an online software reseller who tried to
auction four authentic packages of Autodesk's AutoCAD software on eBay.

Grants and other research funding
Three libraries bag in-kind grants from LibQUAL+ for survey participation
LibQUAL+ has announced that three libraries have been selected to receive in-kind grants to
facilitate their participation in the 2010 LibQUAL+ survey. LibQUAL+ is a suite of services from ARL
that libraries use to solicit, track, understand and act upon users' opinions of service quality. The
selection of grantees was reportedly based on financial need, contribution to the growth of
LibQUAL+, and potential for surfacing best practices in the area of library service improvements.
The grant recipients are Elizabeth City State University's G. R. Little Library, Castleton State College
Library, and Capital Community College Library.

Semantico releases SAMS 3.9 with Shibboleth 2 compliance
Online publishing services provider Semantico Ltd. has announced the release of the Semantico
Access Management System (SAMS) version 3.9. The new version, compatible with Shibboleth 2, will
enable publishers to upgrade to Shibboleth 2 well in advance of the June 30, 2010, deadline
