Recently a dance was given at the Peter Weber place in the town of Eau Pleine and as
refreshments for the musicians, Mrs. Weber had stewed a kettle of chicken. The odor
from the lunch was so appetizing that Evan Towle, Geo. Huggins, Wm. Laessig and
Duane Morrison could not resist and when opportunity offered they carried away the
stew, kettle and all, and enjoyed a feast. Later the kettle was returned with apologies
but Mrs. Weber failed to see the joke. A warrant was secured for the arrest of the
perpetrators and they paid fines of $1.00 and costs.

FUNERAL HELD FOR MRS. CLARA WEBER 1885-1958
Funeral services for Mrs. Peter (Clara Amelia) Weber, 73, who died Saturday at
Riverview hospital, were Monday afternoon in the Grace Lutheran Church. the Rev.
Albin Fortney officiated.
Pallbearers were Fred Hess, Ed Kohl, Tom Blume, Earl Kaeser Sr., Andrew Hulce and
Elroy Kotsch. Nick and Sons funeral home took the body to Marshfield for interment.
Mrs. Weber was born Aug. 2, 1885 in Cecil, Wis., to Mr. and Mrs. Herman Krueger. She
was married to Peter Weber June 12, 1904 and they later lived in Stratford. Mr. Weber
died in 1929.
Mrs. Weber lived in Prairie Rapids since 1941 and was a member of the Prairie Rapids
Lutheran Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Emil (Stella Popp), Mrs. Oscar (Lylas) Copes, Mrs.
Walter (Angeline) Clemens and Mrs. Charles (Eleanore) Crofoot, all of Tomahawk; four
sons, Harvey and Melvin, Tomahawk, Jess, New Orleans, La., and Lester, Milwaukee.
A brother, Orville, Mayville; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Janke and Mrs. William Louch,
Brookfield, Wis., and Mrs. Anna Seering, Bonduel; and 17 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.

Mrs. Clara Kohl
STRATFORD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Kohl, 73, Tomahawk, a former Stratford
resident who died Saturday, were held Monday at Grace Lutheran Church in Tomahawk.
Burial was made in Hillside Cemetery at Marshfield.
The former Clara Krueger was born Aug. 2, 1885, in Bonduel. She came to Stratford
when a young woman and was married at Webertown in 1905 to Peter Weber. The
conducted the pavilion at Webertown on the site of the present Riverview Ballroom. Her
husband died in 1929 and her marriage to Harry Kohl took place five years later. He
also preceded her in death. Mrs. Kohl moved to Tomahawk in 1943, where she had
since resided.
She is survived by four sons, Harvey Kohl, Bradley; Melvin Kohl, Tomahawk, Jess Kohl,
New Orleans, La.; Lester Kohl, Molwaukee; four daughters, Mrs. Emil (Stella) Popp, Mrs.
Charles (Eleanor) Crowfoot, and Lylas and Angeline Kohl, all of Bradley.
Those from Stratford who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Reed, Mrs. Emil
Kotsch, Elroy Kotsch and Albert Bahr. Friends and relatives from here who called at the
funeral home Sunday were Madelyn Weber, Ruby Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Weber,
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Conway Weber and daughters, Mr. and Mrs.
Willard Weber, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bean, Mr. and Mrs. Newman Bean, and Nick
Laessig.

PETER W. WEBER
Peter W. Weber a very well known resident of this village passed away at the Marshfield
hospital Wednesday of last week following a two days illness.
The deceased was born in Manitowoc county fifty-three years, two months and ten days
ago. He was married on the 25th of June, 1904 to Miss Clara Krueger of Bonduel, Wis.
To this union was born twelve children, four of which died some years ago. Mr. Weber
had for several years followed the occupation of farming, but during the past few years
he conducted a soft drink parlor and dance pavilion. He is survived by his widow, and
eight children, four daughters, Stella, Mrs. Emil Popp, Lylas, Angeline, Elnore, four sons,
Harvey, Jesse, Lester, Melvin; and one grandson. Also four brothers, Andrew Weber,
L.B. Weber, Henry Weber and John Weber, and one sister, Mrs. Frank Laessig, all of
Stratford.
The funeral was held from the First Presbyterian church, Rev. H. G. Ellsworth officiating
Saturday afternoon, April 6th. Burial was made at Marshfield.

Stella Popp, 81, W6550 Hwy. 8, died early Wednesday morning at Sacred
Heart Hospital.
Her funeral has tentatively been planned for 11 a.m. Friday, at Krueger and
Sons Funeral Home, with visitation Thursday evening. Burial will be in
Prairie Rapids Cemetery.

STELLA M. POPP
Stella M. Popp, 81, W6550 Hwy. 8, died Wednesday, July 23, at Sacred
Heart Hospital, Tomahawk.
Funeral services were held Friday morning at Krueger and Sons Funeral
Home, the Rev. Sherman Iverson, of Grace Lutheran Church, officiating.
Burial was in Prairie Rapids Cemetery, town of Nokomis.
The former Stella Weber was born in Stratford on Jan. 25, 1905, the
daughter of Peter and Clara [Krueger] Weber. She was married to Emil
Popp on June 23, 1926, in Waukegan, Ill. He died on June 20, 1959. She
was a Tomahawk area resident since 1935.
Survivors include five sons, all of Tomahawk, Harold, 1969 Schoettler Rd.,
Oscar, W6638 Hwy. 8, John, 2149 Hwy. &, Donald and Robert, both of
W6550 Hwy 8; two brothers, Melvin, Hazelhurst, and Lester, St. Petersburg,
Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Eleanore Crofoot, Appleton; and three grandchildren.
Note: I visited Stella at her home in Tomahawk several times over the last
few years before her death. She gave me many photographs of family
members, and helped me to identify them. I enjoyed her outspoken, jovial
manner, matter-of-fact ways. She was a go-getter! I attended her funeral,
sadly paying my last respects to a lady I'd known all my life. Patti Laessig

and Carolina Marquardt. He died 15 May 1923 in Hartland Township,
Shawano
Co., WI. Friedrich Popp married Friedericke Westphahl born 20 Jan. 1841 in
Prussia. She was the daughter of Fred Westphahl. Friedericke died 28 May
1925 in Hartland Township, Shawano Co., WI and is buried at St. Pauls
Lutheran Church Cemetery in Bonduel.

J. WEBER AND RAYMOND KNOPS PLEAD GUILTY
Jess Weber, arrested Tuesday by Sheriff Simon Schaumburger in
Milwaukee, and Raymond Knops, arrested near Stratford Tuesday night by
Deputy Sheriff, L. B. Weber, were arraigned before Judge G. J. Leicht, on
Wednesday, charged with assault and robbed while armed. They both
pleaded of the charge. (sic). They will no doubt receive sentence Saturday.
It is charged that the two men, who are residents of Stratford neighborhood,
assaulted and robbed Julius Haroldson about 2 oclock last Friday morning.

Walter Clements 1907-1985
Walter L. Clements, 77, 4833 Willow Dam Road, Hazelhurst, died
Wednesday evening at the Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff.
Mr. Clements and his wife Angeline owned and operated Bill and Angies
Resort on the Willow Flowage. He also worked for the Oneida County
Highway Department, retiring in 1967.
He was born Nov. 14, 1907 in Tomahawk, son of A.D. and Sarah Clements.
His wife died in 1967.
Survivors include a son, William, Route 2, Tomahawk; a stepson, George,
1117 Burrough Lake Road, Tomahawk; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Thomas (Jean)

LES WEBER ENTERS WISCONSIN RAPIDS MEET
With 11 semi-finalists in the seventh annual Central Wisconsin Golden
Gloves tournament already picked as a result of elimination bouts held
January 15, the stage is set for the second night of eliminations in Lincoln
Field house in Wisconsin Rapids next Wednesday, January 29, starting at
7:30 p.m.
Among the boys who will be seen in action in the January 29 show are Les
Weber of Stratford, defending the welterweight crown he won in 1940, and
Don Ellis, of Wisconsin Rapids, middleweight champion a year ago who is
fighting in the light-heavyweight ranks Golden Gloves performers and a fine

in their bids for places on the central Wisconsin team which will compete in
the Chicago tournament of champions late in February.
Survivors of next Wednesdays bouts, together with those who came through
undefeated in the January 15 eliminations, will come together here February
19 in the semi-finals and finals to determine the eight championships at
stake.
Leather slingers who reached the semi-finals as a result of the first night of
action in the tournament last week include the following:
Flyweight Antol Sanchez, Camp Elcho; Bantamweight Fred Varela, Camp
Cochrane; Fetherweight Tony Gamache, Hurley; Lightweights Jerry Berard,
Wausau and George Kopczynski, Camp Hixton, Welterweight Oscar Flores,
Camp Cochrane; Middleweight, Edward Sawaska of Wisconsin Rapids, and
Peter Vandermere of Camp Hixton; Light-Heavyweight Moses Winnesheik of
Camp City Point and Light Heavyweight Donald Olson of Taylor.
Boxers have until midnight Friday, January 24, to mail their entry blanks for
the January 29 eliminations. Advance ticket sales indicate a great crowd for
the second night of the tournament.

LES WEBER, TWO SCHAR BOYS WIN AT RAPIDS
From what information we are able to get, we learn that Les Weber and the
two Schar boys, Harvey and Wes, won their fights at Wisconsin Rapids
Wednesday evening. The two Schars won by knockouts, one a technical, in
the first and second rounds. Les Weber won his first fight from a CCC boy in
the first round, and won his second from Florian Gust of Hewitt by decision.
These boys will enter the finals at Wisconsin Rapids, February 17th.

WEBER, W. SCHAR WIN AT GOLDEN GLOVES
Les didnt have an easy time of it last Wednesday night at Wisconsin Raids,
but he won anyway. He won a decision from Flossy Gust of Auburndale,
and now will go to the championship Golden Gloves in Chicago. Les went
down last year, and still thinks that he gave his opponent there a mighty
good fight. He is quite confident this year of winning in Chicago. He is the
ony 1940 champion to repeat.
Wesley Schar, fighting in the 118-pound class, knocked out Joe Gust of
Nekoosa in the second round to cinch his trip to the Chicago Golden Gloves.
The same evening he had won his semi-final fight from Orland Radke of
Stevens Point with a knock-out.
Harvey Schar, Wes brother, lost his first fight to Bill Sickles of Wisconsin
Rapids on a decision, but was given the right to fight in the finals when
Sickles was unable to go on. However, Harvey lost that fight too, by a
decision, to Ken Brenner of Stevens Point.
