October 15-19 Kindergarten This week we are moving on... Kindergarten already learned the letter Alef, Bet and Vet and this week will be starting Gimmel (G sound). The students learned many songs (tha I am sure you are hearing in the house), they also know so many colors! They are really doing great. I introduced the Kindergarten students to their Hebrew names and showed them how to write it. This week you will receive a homework assignment to write their name. I am also sending home this week a list of words we learned with the translations and transliterations. Please take some time each day to go over the words with your child. You can write them on flashcards and play memory games together as a family. It makes for a wonderful dinner game. :) One of the words we will be learning this week that begin with the letter Gimmel is "garbayim" socks. This Friday we will have a Fun Friday show and tell - Crazy Garbayim Day. I can't wait! Homework Tuesday - Please write your name 4 times. First Grade Kita Alef is doing well. We are having fun singing songs together and learning Hebrew! Last week we played on the interactive board for a review of all the letters, vowels and vocabulary we learned so far. The students really enjoyed seeing the stories and children of the Tal Am program come alive! This week we will be moving on to the letter Bet. New vocabulary words will be introduced. This week I will begin to send home weekly homework sheets with pages attached for practice reading. Note that reading pages were read and reviewed in class previously. The students should be able to read the words in the short stories. Please make sure that your child completes his/her homework, you sign that it is completed and return it to class. Any changes to the homework will be noted in class and posted on this webpage. You will also received attached the new and past vocabulary words with the translation and transliteration to assist you in helping your child. I find that the best way to study the Hebrew language is through Index Cards (one side English, the other side Hebrew). The students can copy the words as sight words (they will not be able to read all the words at this time). A good game is to put all the words face down with the Hebrew word showing and the students say the English translation. They look in the back to check if it is correct and then get to keep it. If they did not get it correct it goes back to the table and they have to wait at least 1 turn before going back to that card. Play together! Its a wonderful dinner-time game. :) When the students feel that you are participating and that they are teaching YOU... they will internalize the information better. Please return the index cards to school the day after it is given so I can check it, and give it a grade. After that - the index cards are to stay at home ... so think of a good place and way to organize it. :) Homework: Monday - Create index cards using the new Bet vocabulary words (one side English, one side Hebrew). Take a few moments to study. Tuesday - Read page 11 and translate to parents. Study vocabulary words on cards. Wednesday - Read page 37 and translate the parents. Study vocabulary words on cards. Thursday - Read page 39 and translate to parents. Study vocabulary words on cards. Friday - Study vocabulary words. 2nd Grade Kita Bet had a test last week on the words that begin with the letter Kaf. They did VERY well and I was extremly proud of my students! This year, we began the 3rd book out of 4 in the Tal Am series. When we finish it we will begin cursive Hebrew!!! Please make sure that your child takes about 10 minutes per day to practice the vocabulary words. I will also begin to send home practice reading passage of stories we have read and went over in class. When Index cards are given as a homework it will be due the next day and given a grade. After I look at the cards, the students should keep their index cards at home in an accessible place to them. Please think of a way to maintain all the index cards and keep them organized. This week, I will introduce the Hebrew letters chaf and final chaf in class and a few new words that have “chaf” in them. We will also read and listen to a new story. Homework: Tuesday – Album page (will be handed out on Tuesday) Thursday – practice reading story “dahg bakad” – did not get to make copies – no homework 3rd Grade Kita Gimmel is continuing on their Hebrew journey. This year we are going quickly through the first book of Tal Am as review for some and new material for others. Once we go through the first book we will slow down. I have also introduced some letters in cursive. In Israel, people read in print or cursive but write primarily in cursive Hebrew known as “chtiv.” Last week the stuents were given a new set of vocabulary words with the letters Bet and Vet. We will have a test on the words next week, Tuesday or Wednesday. Please make sure that your child takes 5-10 minutes per day to go over the words. They can play games with their index cards. Please note that when index cards are a homework assisngment they are due the following day for a grade. After that, the index cards are to stay at home for practice. Please find a way to keep the index cards accessible and organized for your child. If you can, take some time a few times per week to play a game with your child using the cards. They will love teaching you and will therefore internatlize the material. I will begin to send practice reading stories. These will all be short stories that were already discussed and translated in class! Though your child may not be able to read all the vocabulary words (many are sight words at this time), they should be able to read the short stories sent home and should be able to translate it for you! Homework: Monday – put words randomly (from all the words we learned) on Bingo Sheet. Return to class tomorrow. Thursday – practice reading short story and translate to your parents. 4th Grade Kita Dalet seems to enjoy our new books “Chaverim B’Ivrit” (Friends in Hebrew). We are following the story and information in the book to create our own albums, which the students will take home at the end of the year. We are busy learning and adding new Hebrew vocabulary. Please make sure that your child goes over the vocabulary words 510 minutes per day. You can play games together. I learned in college that when you teach someone else, you internalize the material yourself even better! Play dinner games with the index cards. This week we will be reading new passages, practicing our reading skills, writing skills and comprehension skills in Hebrew. We will also be reviewing the words in preperation for our test on Thursday. Homework: Monday – Put words randomly on Bingo Sheet. Return to class tomorrow. Tuesday, Wednesday – Study all vocabulary words. Thursday – Test!!! 5th Grade Kita Hey has been hard at work learning letters, vowels and many vocabulary words. All the words are ones they are able to read. The students are doing very well. They are able to read, present a skit, and put together short sentences using the vocabulary words learned. We are talking and singing in class. Please make sure that your child knows their letters and vowels… without this, they will not be able to read, write or advance in the Hebrew language. They should learn both print and cursive. In Israel most things are written in print (sometimes in cursive). However, people write in cursive known as “chtiv” in Hebrew. It is much faster to write in cursive then it is in print and is encouraged. When index cards are sent home as homework, my expectation is that it will be returned the next day for a grade. After I check the index cards (one side Hebrew, one side English) they can keep the cards at home to study. They should take approximately 5 – 10 minutes EACH day to go ove their letters/vowels and words. They know some index cards games they can play, and I have no doubt will enjoy playing with you. I learned in collage that when you teach someone else, you are able to internalize the materials you are teaching. I will begin to send home some practice reading assignments to read and translate. All the reading sent home will be previously read and discussed in class. Please note that we do have a test this Tuesday! Homework: Monday – study study study for test! Tuesday – Test on words, letters (print and cursive) and vowels. Wednesday – Practice reading and translating. Thursday – create flash cards for new vocabulary words using the new letters we learned today. – We did not get to the new words today. Therefore, there is no homework today. 6th Grade Kita Vav has been hard at work learning letters, vowels and many vocabulary words. All the words are ones they are able to read.
