DIRECTOR OF ST PAUL’S INSTITUTE The Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral intends to appoint a Director of St Paul’s Institute. THE VISION OF THE CATHEDRAL CHURCH OF ST PAUL IN LONDON St Paul’s Cathedral seeks to enable people in all their diversity to encounter the transforming presence of God in Jesus Christ. As a community of worshippers, staff and volunteers we work with care and imagination to be a centre for welcome, worship and learning which inspires successive generations to engage with the richness of the Christian faith and its heritage. We aim to do this with confidence, compassion and creativity, promoting dignity and justice for everyone. We work with the Bishop and Diocese of London and the wider church, as a spiritual focus for London, the nation and the world. The Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral ST PAUL’S INSTITUTE St Paul’s Institute was established by the Chapter of St Paul’s in order to recapture the Cathedral’s ancient role as a centre of public debate with a particular focus on engagement with the financial services sector of the City of London. The Institute’s mission is to stimulate dialogue on contemporary economic and financial issues, focusing on the need for positive values systems, rooted in the Christian faith, to inform our modern global society. In doing so, it seeks: a) to help in the process of re-envisaging our financial system as a force for social wellbeing; b) to foster an informed Christian response to some of the most urgent ethical and spiritual issues of our times, namely financial integrity, the changing pattern of economic activity and the meaning of the common good. The Institute has a website: http://www.stpaulsinstitute.org.uk/ JOB DESCRIPTION Working as part of a team with the Chancellor, the Manager, the Administrator and, initially, with two current honorary interim directors, to lead the Institute in the next phase of its development and in particular: - - - Sharpen its strategic vision and review its organisational structure Deepen its engagement with policy formation and its implementation, and with thought leaders in finance, business, the voluntary sector, the media, regulation, Government and academia Where appropriate, help it to articulate a position that is consonant with the ethos of St Paul’s Cathedral and its mission and in particular to enable the contribution which Christian faith can make to forming the values and practices of the financial sector Develop the Institute’s network of experts, commentators and supporters who are able to help drive its work forward, drawing on good practice in other leading organisations This post presents an opportunity for someone a) who wishes to take a thought-leadership role in the vision, strategy and organising of influential public debate on the relationship between finance, economics and social wellbeing b) is prepared to take practical steps as part of a team to realise the vision c) committed to promoting dignity and justice with confidence and creativity MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To provide leadership and vision as Director of St Paul’s Institute, its work and mission, as a department of St Paul’s Cathedral. Responsible to the Chancellor, the Director of St Paul’s Institute will be responsible for: - Overall strategy and forward planning of the Institute’s programme of events, publications and campaigning, together with the leadership team Formulating a long-term and sustainable organisational structure that integrates fully with the goals of the Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral and the Cathedral’s vision statement whilst including capacity for advisors and long-term working relationships with external organisations - Fundraising for the ongoing costs of the Institute including the implementation and extension of the Institute’s programme and work Strengthening relationships with relevant organisations, identifying and fostering a general ethos of collaboration towards specific goals Producing articles for the Institute website and other external publications/organisations on a regular basis Raising the Institute’s profile and influence in key areas Participating as speaker and Chair at Institute, Cathedral and external events Compliance with Health and Safety requirements, including making Risk Assessments Compliance with the Cathedral’s Safeguarding Policy Compliance with the Equality Act The job description is an operational document that does not form part of your contract of employment. PERSON SPECIFICATION We are open to a broad range of possibilities but as a public representative and voice for the Cathedral’s Institute, the successful candidate is likely to have a significant number of the following attributes, skills and abilities, and will recognise the need to work as part of a team. Personal Attributes The ideal candidate will: - Be a communicant member of the Church of England or of a Church in full communion with it Be educated to Degree level in either theology, economics, politics, philosophy or social studies and be able to demonstrate sustained reflection in the other subjects Have relevant experience in the running and operating of think tanks, church-based and/or Charity-focused organisations Have experience in, or extensive knowledge, of the financial sector – either public or private sector or both Have excellent contacts in a number of the sectors with which the Institute wishes to engage and will be capable of developing them swiftly and effectively in other sectors, with an ability to pass seamlessly between them Skills and Abilities - - Excellent personal presentation, willing and confident to undertake broadcast media appearances (no previous experience is required, training can be provided) Proven capacity for thought-leadership Directorial and/or senior management experience Team building and management skills Broad general knowledge of current social issues and ability to articulate a clear understanding of current/future landscape of social institutions and political/economic trends Experience in fundraising is highly desirable MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS Salary £40,000 Probationary Period The Post is subject to a probationary period of 6 months during which we would ask the successful candidate to work with the current Interim-Directors to develop a revised strategy document and work plan. During the probationary period the notice period on either side is one week Hours The successful candidate will not view this as a ‘9 to 5’ job, being more interested in ‘getting the job done’. Nevertheless, while we are open to alternative working structures, our starting point is that the formal contractual hours would be 9am-5pm, 5 days per week with evening and weekend events developed as part of the strategy External appointments We are open to discussing the possibility of external appointments where these are consistent with the objectives of the Institute, for example, nonexecutive Director and Committee roles on public commissions Annual Leave 33 days inclusive of statutory holidays Pension: The successful applicant will be automatically enrolled into the Cathedral’s workplace pension scheme immediately upon joining. The minimum contribution is 1% and the employer contributes 4%.
