EXAMPLES OF HOW TO MAKE THE ILLUSTRATIONS
Examine the illustration on page 83. Ask, what do you see? What language is the writing in? What makes this illustration attractive? How is it similar to the image on the opposite page? What book is pictured on the opposite page? The illustrated manuscripts created by Muslims are some of the most beautiful works of art ever made. Such manuscripts do not depict humans or animals, as this would violate Islamic teachings.
Muhammad encouraged his followers to worship one God, Allah, instead of the many human and animal-shaped idols that many people worshiped at the time. Instead, artists focused on various forms of writing and decoration. You will use an illustrated manuscript to record and organize what you have learned about Muhammad.
:
This is Arabic Calligraphy and is part of an illustrated manuscript. Show only the illustration at the top, and ask what do you see? What decorative touches has the artist used to make this illustrated manuscript page beautiful?
Muslim artists developed decorative arts to a high level.
Prohibited from depicting human or animal forms, they concentrated their attention on geometric shapes, plant life, and elaborate writing called calligraphy.
Uncover the second image and ask what do you see? This calligraphy represents the name for the prophet Muhammad. How has the artist decorated this word? How might you incorporate some of the ideas you see here in the illustrated manuscripts you will create?
