2016 Region E Conference
February 19-21, 2016 in Newport News, Virginia
July 29, 2015
Dear Sponsor,
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a not-for-profit educational and service organization
that empowers women to succeed and advance in the field of engineering, and to be recognized
for their life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders. SWE is the driving force that
establishes engineering as a highly desirable career for women through an exciting array of
training and development programs, networking opportunities, scholarships, and outreach and
advocacy activities. We are delighted to announce that this year’s Mid-Atlantic regional
conference will be co-hosted in Newport News, Virginia by the professional Hampton Roads
SWE and collegiate Old Dominion University SWE sections. We are extremely excited to have
the chance to host this year’s conference, as well as share the abundant engineering
opportunities and resources within our area.
As the Hampton Roads is known throughout Virginia for its coastal environment, we elected this
year’s conference theme to be “Under the SWE.” We feel that this theme highlights our
extraordinary maritime location which fosters exceptional opportunities including, but certainly
not limited to, development in the shipbuilding, military and aerospace industries. The main
goal of the conference is to connect approximately three hundred women engineers from sixty
universities and thirteen professional SWE sections that attend each year with the expansive
corporate and academic engineering communities within our region. Through our career fair,
professional workshops, and corporate events, we provide an ideal opportunity for recruiting
and networking. The area is home to many innovative technological and engineering
companies, an international port, as well as nationally-ranked destinations such as colonial
Williamsburg, Jamestown, and the Virginia Beach boardwalk. We believe this wealth of
resources and unique attractions is the perfect foundation for an incredibly successful
conference.
We would formally like to invite you to join us as a sponsor of the 2016 Mid-Atlantic Region E
SWE conference. There are a variety of ways to get involved for companies of any size. In
addition to the career and graduate school fair, donations in kind and advertising within the
conference program is available. There is also an opportunity to submit abstracts for leadership
development workshop sessions. Through these different components we strive to facilitate
mutually beneficial collaborations and enthusiasm amongst women engineers and our
sponsors. The sponsorship package contains information regarding options for support and
other participation opportunities.

Attractions Highlights
The first colonists of America arrived on the coast of
Hampton Roads in 1607 which has given the area a rich
history as well as plenty of time to develop a vast range
of attractions that are sure to please engineers of every
age! The Hampton Roads region is comprised of seven
cities that each offer their own interesting and unique
atmospheres and experiences. The area is an
engineering hotbed, having record breaking sized
gantry cranes, the first bridge-tunnel in existence, and
major industrial sites such as the corporate
NASA’s Langley Research Center
headquarters of Norfolk Southern and STIHL U.S.
operations, as well as NASA’s Langley Research Center (LaRC) where the Apollo lunar lander
was flight-tested.
Museums such as the Mariner’s Museum, the Virginia
Living Museum, Virginia War Museum and Nauticus
(where the USS Wisconsin, one of the largest
battleships ever built, is open to explore) pepper the
region. Colonial Williamsburg, the Yorktown
Battlefields, and the Endview Plantation all are steeped
in history and only a short drive away. Born from the
first successful colony and currently the home of one of
the largest military bases, the patriotism of Hampton
Roads is contagious and can definitely keep you busy
for the weekend! The Virginia Beach Oceanfront
Colonial Williamsburg
Boardwalk, lined by restaurants with delicious and local
seafood, is one of the country’s top ranking beaches and is worth a trip even in February
weather. The Norfolk Zoo and Virginia Aquarium may interest any animal lovers.
