CLASS TITLE:
PERFORMING ARTS TECHNICAL SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position focuses on technical support for
faculty and students performing in concert, studio, and classroom. This position will coordinate
the technical needs required of the Performing Arts including studio design and building,
training of student interns and student workers in studio oversight and concert support. This
position in this class will perform duties in all performance venues on and off campus including
sound reinforcement, concert recordings, stage setup, lighting, etc. when appropriate. The
position will train and oversee the crews engaged in this work, schedule their work times and
the facilities in which they work. This position will coordinate the new gear and replacement
cycles of technical and concert gear.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Establish and monitor lab schedules for Instructional Assistants campus aides and student
workers; provide work direction, train and evaluate the work of Instructional Assistants
campus aides and tutors; sign tutor time records. Provide performance feedback to
workers and to faculty responsible for internships.
2.
Develop or assist in developing department budgets; coordinate purchases and other
expenditures; maintain records and prepare related reports.

Participate in the planning, design and construction of department instructional facilities
4.
Operate and instruct others in the use of a variety of technical or specialized equipment
related to area of specialty including audio recording equipment, sound reinforcement
equipment, microcomputers and related computerized equipment, calibrated scientific
equipment, hand and power tools and large machinery as required.
5.
Design, build and maintain recording studios and maintain audio equipment. Train
students in studio building including soldering and equipment design/installation.
6.
Assist instructors, staff and students in the use of a variety of equipment, materials and
supplies in an instructional laboratory setting, including audio recording equipment, sound
reinforcement equipment, lighting, microcomputer hardware and software applications;
design, modify and enforce lab procedures and policies.
7.
Explain and demonstrate learning exercises and instructional materials to aid in student
comprehension of course work; present information to students in a logical, accurate and
interesting manner.
8.
Monitor students in class work procedures; demonstrate safety and emergency
procedures in class and workshop situations; assure security of lab materials, equipment,

machinery, computers and software
9.
Prepare, distribute and explain orientation materials for instructional personnel and
students.
10.
Provide technical assistance in the preparation of specifications for equipment and
material purchases; interview vendors to assess new equipment and supplies and
recommend selection as requested.
11.
Set up and supervise experiments, issuing materials, setting up equipment, checking
student work, checking in tools, equipment and materials and maintaining appropriate
records.
12.
Maintain student records in order to assess progress of students; administer tests,
projects and assignments, commenting on content, technique and areas of needed
improvement; proctor laboratory exercises and experiments; inform instructors of student
progress.
13.
Provide information on available resources to students; encourage student participation
and advise students regarding learning materials available.
14.
Advise continuing and prospective students in selection and possible sequence of course
selection in the area of specific specialty and be a source of equipment knowledge and
information for students
15.
Order, receive, catalog and store supplies, materials and equipment; direct and participate
in inventory of lab equipment and materials, assuring that adequate quantities are
available for instructional use; mark equipment with approved identification. Monitor
student work and report student activities in the studios.
16.
Maintain learning environment in a safe, clean and orderly condition; make minor repairs
and adjustments to learning equipment; perform more complex or technical repairs and
create specialized tools, instruments, equipment or facilities as needed.

instructional materials and equipment.

Design and produce displays, experiments and multi-media materials.
Operate a variety of equipment related to area of learning including specialized and highly
technical equipment and machinery.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to an Associate in Arts degree in the assigned subject discipline or
related field and three to five years of directly related work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions in this class may be required to possess a valid California driver license and other
appropriate certificates.
WORK DIRECTION, LEAD AND SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Positions in this class have not been formally assigned supervisory responsibilities. Incumbents
because of length of service are asked to demonstrate various portions of their work and provide
guidance to new personnel. This a generally accepted practice in this field.

communications with a variety of individuals and/or groups of individuals from diverse
backgrounds on a regular, on-going basis; ability to work effectively on a variety of tasks
concurrently while meeting established deadlines and changing priorities.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily works indoors; subject to occasional working: outside during inclement weather,
based upon location; poorly-lighted work areas, may work at any College location during day
and/or evening hours with occasional evenings, holidays and/or weekends on an as-needed
basis. Exposure to electricity used as power source for equipment. Occasional local travel may
be requested. Instructional lab environment; subject to equipment hazards, loud noise, dust,
extreme temperatures, lifting and prolonged standing in some assignments.
