Chapter 52 Objectives and Key Terms
An Introduction to Ecology and the Biosphere
General Comment: Chapter 52 is some basic ecology. You might be able to simply
count on a review book to get what you need if time gets tight. But, if you are being
quizzed on this material then I would suggest you take a good look at the objectives
below.
Objectives
YOU MUST KNOW:
1. The role of abiotic factors in the formation of biomes.
2. Features of freshwater and marine biomes.
3. Major terrestrial biomes and their characteristics.
Other:
1. Figure 52.6: Know what and how factors limit geographic distribution of
organisms.
2. The problem with introducing new species to an area (species transplants)
3. What are the biotic factors that limit a species distribution? Be able to write about
them.
4. Know the abiotic factors that limit species distribution and be able to write about
them.
5. Global Climate Patterns: I have never had a student in the 16 years I have taught
AP Bio that they needed to know about latitude, longitude, etc. and their effect on
climate. But I think just knowing the basics of Global air circulation and
precipitation patterns on page 1157 is just good knowledge.
6. Know figure 52.12 and 52.13 on page 1158.
7. Know figure 52.17.
8. Know the basic characteristics of the various aquatic biomes: lakes, streams and
rivers, estuaries, intertidal zones, ocean pelagic zone and coral reefs and marine
benthic zone.
9. Know the basic characteristics of the terrestrial biomes: tropical forest, desert,
savanna, chaparral, temperature grassland, northern coniferous forest, temperature
broadleaf forest and tundra. Many times there is a matching section where the
College Board will give you a few characteristics and you match them with the
biome.
