RESIDENT FELLOW JOB DESCRIPTION
Resident Fellows (RFs) assist and advise first year students residing in the Gewirz
Student Center. RFs serve a hybrid role with some responsibilities being similar to an
undergraduate resident assistant and others to a hall director. This is a part time
position; however, some situations may require a more extensive time commitment.
Specific duties are described below.
Duty/Emergency On-Call
Take on-call weeknight and weekend duty on a rotating schedule (approximately one
week night per week and 3-4 weekends per semester). Coverage includes
Holidays (except for winter break) but including Week One. Monitor and report the
physical condition of the residence hall.
Act as first responder to emergencies in Gewirz or involving Gewirz residents. Intervene
and/or assist security or medical personnel in emergencies.
Serve as one of the floor marshals in Gewirz as part of the Law Center Emergency
Response Team.
Counseling/Mediation
Advise or refer residents to appropriate offices for academic or personal counseling.
Confront inappropriate behavior when necessary.
Mediate resident conflicts and assist in apartment changes.
Help residents adjust to living in an urban setting.
Academic Support
Assist residents with questions about academic issues, preparation for finals,
outlining, etc.
Provide support and assistance during particularly stressful academic times.
Help residents through the transition to law school and Georgetown, in particular.
Community Development
Be approachable and available and willing to provide information or referral on a variety
of issues. Hold floor meetings as necessary.
Promote an atmosphere of mutual respect among the residents and concern for the
physical environment.
Serve as a role model for residents.
Coordinate floor activities each semester to promote community development.
Produce programs each semester, focusing on issues important to Gewirz residents.
Assist in the design and implementation of the semester core programs. (Fall:
Halloween Festival; Spring: Java Hut; Throughout Academic Year: Professionalism in
Law School Series, Faculty Spotlight)
Administrative
Assist and be present during the fall opening and the spring closing of the Gewirz
Student Center.
Provide staff support during orientation.
Complete apartment inventories and desk hours, as necessary.
Attend weekly staff meetings.
Attend weekly individual meetings with the Assistant Director of Residence Life and
Student Programs.
Support the mission of the Office of Residence Life.
Other duties as assigned
Staff Training
Participate in fall staff training one week before fall orientation (August).
Participate in a winter retreat during Week One (January).
Qualifications
Must be 2nd, 3rd or 4th year student in the Juris Doctor program, or in an LL.M program
during entire 2015-2016 academic year.
Must have at least a 3.0 grade point average at the end of the academic year prior to
employment
Previous student-related and/or residential life experience preferred
No conflicting responsibilities or activities totaling more than 15 hr/week. Most
fellowships (i.e. – Law Fellow) and some clinics require a work schedule not
conducive to the requirements of being a Resident Fellow.
Compensation
A single efficiency apartment in the Gewirz Student Center; utilities included.
Value of housing benefit is approximately $16,960 (based on 2014-2015 housing rates).
One-year appointment (Renewal of employment subject to re-application and
interview process)
Significant Resident Fellow Event Commitments
In addition to implementing smaller social and educational programs to Gewirz,
Resident Fellows participate in the following annual events:
Move-In Day and Welcome Week Programs: Move-In Day takes place on
Saturday, August 22nd and is a day-long commitment to assisting new residents with the
logistics of moving in to Gewirz. During Welcome Week (August 22-25, 2015), the
Resident Fellows plan and implement social & educational programs for residents.
Faculty Spotlight Series: Once a month, Residence Life hosts an installment of the
“Faculty Spotlight” series in the Gewirz TV Lounge, showcasing a Georgetown faculty
member and their area of expertise in a casual lunch conversation environment.
Resident Fellows determine the line-up of faculty spotlighted and invite them to the
program.
“Professionalism in Law School” Series: “Professionalism in Law School” is a
series of 3-5 meetings/seminars in which Resident Fellows address common inquiries
that arise for 1Ls regarding social conduct in introductory professional experiences.
Topics of discussion have included: professional dress, reception etiquette, etc. These
meetings occur at relevant times during the academic year and the agenda is set by the
Resident Fellows.
Halloween Fest for the Kids: Halloween Fest for the Kids is a seasonally-themed
celebration that takes place on the last Friday of October. It involves coordinating with a
local recreation center to bring children to Gewirz or bring Gewirz to them for fun games,
activities, and trick-or-treating. Resident Fellows take ownership of this event, with the
support of the Office of Residence Life.
Stress Free Zone: The Stress Free Zone is provided by the Office of Residence Life
during finals in both the Winter and Spring. It is a time when Residence Life plans
specific activities that provide an opportunity to escape from the stress of finals.
Resident Fellows are responsible for attending certain programs and providing
heightened support to residents during this time.
Winter Retreat and Training: Resident Fellows need to be available during Week 1
to participate in training activities and Resident Fellow meetings to prepare for the Spring
semester.
Java Hut: Java Hut is the annual Resident Fellow-run talent showcase that usually
takes place in the last week of January or first week of February. Java Hut is both
conceptualized and executed by the Resident Fellows, with the support of the Office of
Residence Life. The initial planning for Java Hut usually begins in December. The time
and efforts involved gradually increases up until the event concludes.
Move-Out: Move-Out usually occurs on a rolling basis from the time residents finish
finals, up until Move-Out Day, which is the Saturday before graduation. Resident Fellows
are responsible for checking residents out, completing apartment condition reports, and
preparing the building to be turned over for summer housing.

6. Activity 2: Imagine as an RF that you receive the e-mail below from one of your residents:
Hi RF,
I don’t want to bother you – you’re probably pretty busy. I know I am! Law school is definitely more than I
expected. I haven’t been getting much sleep because I am reading and outlining for about 6 hours a
night. It’s exhausting! I find myself having a few drinks every night just to get to sleep – LOL. I had a 4.0 in
undergrad and thought law school would be sort of the same. My section is intense but it seems like
everyone else is picking things up quickly. I think I might have made the wrong choice about law school. I
came because it seemed like the logical next step for me and I like a good debate every once in a while.
Plus, my parents said they would be able to help financially but now their circumstances have changed
and they can’t. I’m just not sure law school is worth the cost and all of this work! Since you made it
through 1L I thought you might have some advice for me.
