(For the school computer lab, independent work followed by class work on the projector.)
1. Mix Those Genes:
a. Follow the directions and, when complete, include a screen shot of your
baby.
b. Choose another set of parents and take a screen shot of that baby.
c. Explain using Mendelian Genetics (i.e. show the Punnett Square) the
difference between the two babies and why.
***Now as a class, we will choose two parents and you will predict the outcome of the
baby. The group of four who predicts the baby correctly most quickly wins.***
2. Pass the Genes:
a. List the traits that Melvin Melonhead has.
b. For each trait complete a Punnett Square showing Melvin mom’s genetic
contribution and Melvin dad’s genetic contribution.
i. Circle Melvin’s genotype for each Punnett Square.
***Now as a class, we will give each group of four an opportunity to make Melvin and
the group with the fastest time wins.***
3. Race the Cell:
a. Break your group of four into two groups of two.
b. The first pair will start and as one of you is synthesizing the protein, have
the other write the codons and anticodons.
c. Write your time next to the mRNA and tRNA sequence. Also, record how
many proteins the cell made in the equivalent time.
d. Repeat the process with the other pair.
e. Alternate until each group has data three times.
***I will take the top two pairs and pit them against each other on the big screen. The
fastest time wins.***
4. Mighty Mutation Maker: To be completed individually
a. Enter your name.
b. Record the codons and corresponding amino acids for the letters of your
name.
c. Systematically, click on each mutation and repeat steps A and B. In other
words, click on deletion, record codons and amino acids. Then, click on
insertion, record codons and amino acids.
***As a class, in groups of four, I will present the students with a name and then give
them various scenarios…The N is deleted in LINDA…An F is added between the D and
the A in LINDA…I will complete 10 scenarios with different names and the group which
gets the most correct answers (both codon and amino acid) will win.
