San Juan County Jr. Livestock
Mission Statement
The San Juan County Jr. Livestock program is a non-profit
institution of the people and is concerned primarily with the
development of youth in areas of leadership and responsibility.
The purpose of the show is to stimulate interest among livestock
breeders and members of 4-H and FFA clubs in feeding and
breeding better livestock.
The purpose of the sale is to furnish interested youth a medium
through which they may display and sell their animals, giving the
public a better appreciation of the value and quality of livestock
raised by our youth.

2015 Rules & Regulations
“The San Juan County Jr. Livestock Show and Sale is a closed
show and sale. It is open only to San Juan County and Grand
County Residents, therefore the participant must raise their animal
in San Juan County or Grand County and reside in their respective
county during the growing period of the animal being raised.”
1. Age-All exhibitors must have completes the 3rd grade and
turned 8 years of age prior to October 1. Exhibitors can
only show through the summer following their senior year
of high school.
2. Ownership of animals and Mandatory Club
Membership-All entries should be approved and signed by
an extension educator or FFA advisor, certifying that the
animal to be exhibited is owned by the exhibitor. All
animals to be shown must be certified and registered as 4-H
or FFA projects. If an animal has been shown in any
market show, it must be shown in the name of the same
exhibitor as all other previous shows.
3. Tagging Dates-All project animals must be tagged and
approved on the scheduled tagging dates. No animals will
be tagged at a later date. All animals to be included in the
Rate of Gain contest must be weighed on the following
dates: Beef-April 25, 9-10am, Lambs, Goats, and
Hogs, June 6th or 13th, 9-10am. All animals must
be castrated by the time of tagging or they will not be
tagged.
4. Entry Fee & Forms-All animals to be shown must be
registered by Monday, June 23rd, 2014 at 5:00pm. . A fee
of $5.00 per species to be shown is due with the entry
registration form, and is non-refundable. Exhibitors must
designate if they will show as 4-H or FFA participants.
You will also need to designate who you could comfortably
share a pen with if necessary, including Mini’s. Pen
assignments will be random and no permanent changes
should be made to public property. Exhibitors are
responsible for postmarking or hand delivering their
registration form to the Extension Office or mail to San
Juan County Jr. Livestock, P O Box 382, Monticello, UT
84535, on or before June 23, 2014.
5. Service Projects-Each show participant must participate in
at least 4 hours of 4-H or FFA related service projects
before they will be allowed to show or sell their animals.
This should be documented in the participant’s record
book. Established service hours criteria will be as follows:
 At least 2 hours of approved work must be at the
San Juan County Fairgrounds in Monticello on one
or more of the following work days: Saturday,
June 6, 2015 or Saturday, July 18, 2015,
beginning at 9:00am each day going through
12:00pm.
 The remaining 2 hours may be any 4-H or FFA
related community service project as approved by
the local project leader, FFA Advisor or the USU
Extension Educator.
6. Barn Sheets – Barn sheets are optional. An award will be
given for each barn sheet turned in. The barn sheet will
need to be turned in, be sure to keep a copy for your
records.
7. Record Books-To be eligible for Record Book Awards
your completed 4-H or FFA Record Book is due by
October 1, 2015. Record books can be dropped off at the
Extension Office or mailed to San Juan County Jr.
Livestock, PO Box 382, Monticello, UT 84535.
8. Weigh-In-All animals are required to weigh-in at the San
Juan County Fair Grounds prior to the show and sale. All
animals must be clean (including tags) and will be
inspected prior to getting off their trailer. Each animal will
be allowed to cross the scale only one time. Once animals
have been weighed they will not be allowed to leave the
fairgrounds if they are to be shown. Your completed barn
sheet may be turned at this time. Allowable weights for the
show and sale will be as follows:

All animals under the minimum weight will be sifted from
the show. All animals under the minimum weight or over
the maximum weight will not be eligible for the market
classes or participate in the sale. These animals can be
shown in the Showmanship Classes.
9. Dress Code-All exhibitors are required to dress according
to 4-H or FFA standards during showmanship, the market
show and sale. 4-H: A long or short sleeve shirt, which
fastens completely down the front with a collar, is
mandatory. Shirts must be white in color and need not be
western style. Pants must be blue or black in color. The
following is not allowed: T-shirts, tank tops or sleeveless
shirts. There is to be a 4-H emblem or patch on all
members’ shirts, placed on the left shoulder or the left
pocket. FFA: FFA Jacket, White Shirt, Tie, Dark Pants
10. The Show-The show will be a 2 day show with the sale on
the third day. All showmanship classes will be held on
Thursday beginning at 1:00pm. The order will be Hogs,
Lambs, Goats, and Beef. All market classes will be held on
Friday beginning at 9:00am. The order of species will be
the same. A student judging class will follow the market
show on the second day. Ages for showmanship and
student judging will be: Junior-having completed 7th grade
and younger, Senior-having completed 8th grade and older.
11. Each participant may show up to 2 different animals, but
they must be different species. Each participant may tag 1
alternate per species. Families or groups raising animals at
the same facility may also tag one alternate for the family
or group.
12. All animals must be gentle and fit for showing. Any
animal that is not controllable, by committee decision, will
not be allowed to compete. Any abusive action that may
cause bruising to the animal (such as hitting swine with
canes) is to be avoided. Because of potential harm to the
animal there will be no oil allowed on hogs. Any other
outside devices such as ice packs or cold water meant to
cause tightening in an animal will not be allowed.
Drenching and all similar practices are also prohibited.
Any participant found engaging in these practices will not
be allowed to participate in the show or sale.
13. All animals should be washed before final weigh in.
Any washing or touch up clipping during the fair days
should be done by the exhibitor. Exhibitors are encouraged
to help each other, but only minimal assistance by adults is
allowed and only if the exhibitor is actively participating
and involved. Exhibitors should be present while animals
are in the wash racks/areas. Parents will not be allowed to
help youth in the show ring. Special needs will be
considered.
14. It is unethical and in most cases even unlawful to
administer drugs to livestock within 20 to 30 days of
slaughter. Animals that are unmanageable to show should
be withdrawn from their class rather than be tranquilized.
By federal regulations, random testing will occur at
slaughter, and animals will be condemned which have been
given any injection or oral dosages of tranquilizers, pain
killers, antibiotics, diuretics, steroids or other foreign
substances during withdrawal periods before slaughter.
Bloat medicine and other medications with no withdrawal
requirements may be permissible. Exhibitors need to be
aware of potential health hazards to consumers who eat
animals that have received any of the above mentioned
dosages. A veterinarian may be on the fairgrounds and
blood testing may take place during the fair.
15. Any participant found treating their animal inhumanely will
not participate in the show and sale and may possibly be
excluded from participating next year.
16. The board reserves the right to sift any animal, at any time
that is unhealthy or contagious in any way. Examples
include any animal that is prolapsed, any animal that has
external parasites, including lice and ticks, or other sickness
or condition.
17. Interference or criticism of the Judge will not be tolerated.
Any complaint must be given to the board within 24 hours,
in writing accompanied by a $25.00 deposit. If the
grievance committee agrees that it is a good suggestion, the
author will get his his/her money back, if not, the money
will go into the Jr. Livestock fund.
18. Ribbon Premiums- is $3.00-Blue, $2.00-Red, $0-White.
Belt Buckles will be awarded to Grand Champion and 1st
& 2nd Reserve Champions in each species.
Prizes will be given for Showmanship in all 4 species
Buckle for 1st place, $15.00 for 2nd place, and $10.00 for 3rd
place.
Student judging winners will be chosen for Junior, Senior
and Adult divisions and will receive a check for $25.00 for
1st place, $15.00 for 2nd place, and $10.00 for 3rd place.
Record Book awards will be given for Senior, Junior and
FFA divisions. $150.00 for 1st place, $75.00 for 2nd place
Awards will also be given to each participant for a
completed barn sheet.
A Herdsman Award will be given for each species
19. Each participant will only be allowed to sell Purple, Blue or
Red ribbon animals. White ribbon animals will not be sold.
If an exhibitor shows 2 animals and one of their animals
receives a Grand Champion or Reserve placing, the
exhibitor will be allowed to sell both animals, otherwise
each exhibitor will be allowed to sell only one animal.
20. The sale - The order of the sale will be Lambs, Goats, Hogs
and Beef.
21. Animals must be shown and placed in order to sell.
Animals must be shown and sold by the registered owner.
The Grand Champion and Reserve Champions must be sold
or forfeit awards.
22. The highest bidder will be the buyer. The auctioneer will
settle any disputes among bidders.
23. The Jr. Livestock Board will deduct a sale commission of
5% from the price of each animal sold. If a participant
does not sell an animal at the auction, a $15.00 pass-out fee
will be charged. This must be paid before the animal can
be removed from the fairgrounds.
24. All stalls and pens will be kept clean and well bedded. Any
exhibitor that appropriates another exhibitor’s feed or
bedding without permission will be disqualified. Stalls
must be cleaned by 7pm on the Sunday after the sale or a
$30.00 fee will be imposed and paid in full before weigh in
of following year. Exhibitors are responsible for furnishing
their own tools for clean up and use.

all rules for the best interest of the
show.

record your time. This is an “On Your Honor"
basis.
August 5, 2015 (Wednesday)
Weigh-in from 4:00p.m.-7:00p.m. This is the only weighin for the Mini's.
August 6, 2015 (Thursday)
Mini-Livestock Showmanship Show 9:00 a.m.
This is put on by the Monticello FFA. Contact
LaMarr Walker or FFA members for information.
( This is not required but, is a great learning opportunity
for the kids)

Mini-Livestock Sale will be the same time as the
Jr. Livestock sale 1:00pm. We will sell the Mini
Lambs after the Jr. Lambs and the Mini Hogs after
the Jr. Hogs.

RULES
The San Juan Mini-Livestock Program is a non-profit
organization concerned primarily with the development
of responsibility and education of the youth of our
communities in the field of agriculture and livestock. The
program encourages both support and participation from
parent and family in this learning process.
. The Mini-Livestock Program consists of Lambs and
Hogs only.
. Participants must have completed Kindergarten and be
a San Juan County Resident.
. Participants are encouraged to keep a record of
expenses and a picture/journal of their experience.
.
This is not required at this level, but will be
required when the child reached Jr. Livestock age.
A fee of $5.00 per species is due with the entry
registration form to Janalee before the animal can
be shown and is non-refundable.
. Participants must complete 2 hours of service with at
least 1 hour at the San Juan County Fairgrounds.
Work days are scheduled for June 6 2015 and
July 18 2015 from 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m.
. All animals must be tagged with a red mini tag in
ordered to be shown. All project animals must be tagged
and approved on the scheduled tagging dates. June 6th
or 13th, 2015 from 9:00am to 10:00am. No animals
will be tagged at a later date. All animals must be
castrated by the time of tagging or they will not be
tagged.

Junior Livestock will assess a $30.00 penalty.

A red plain shirt. No emblems or patches. Long
dark pants , hats and boots are optional. Both the
exhibitor and animal need to be clean and
groomed.
All animals are required to weigh-in at the San Juan
County Fairgrounds on Wednesday August 5,
2015 the night prior to the show. Once animals
have been weighed they will not be allowed to
leave the fairgrounds if they are to be shown.

packing plant.
